I have a three year old male maine coon. For a little while I was having troubles feeding him and he wasn't eating but that was because he was new and I think scared, well he's loosened up since and he eats his food, but he likes to take my clothes and cover his food bowl and his litter box with them. It's not that he doesn't like the food, he eats it all and his litter is clean. Is he playing or trying to tell me something??

Thanks for the responses in advance :o)

In the wild, cats cover their feces to prevent attracting attention of predators. Burying feces reduces odors and this might be an important factor for the survival of the weaker individual that does not want to advertise his or her presence to others. Generally cat's bury their feces with the dirt around it, but your cat may just be expressing his instincts in a different way by using your clothes to cover his food and feces.

My cat does the same thing. He wil scratch on the floor around his food and litter box. It's a territory kind of thing. It's just instinct for male cats to hide what belongs to them. I wouldn't worry about. I've had my cat for six years now and he has done it since he was a kitten.

Cats are funny creatures. We have two. Ours only eat dried food they are not keen on wet food at all.

Our youngest if we put down wet food tries to cover it up thinking he has had an accident on the floor. Our other cat rolls over our clothes if we drop them on the floor as a cat would do if you gave them catnip. He will spend many minutes drooling over our smelly clothes....... I wouldn't worry by what your cat is doing........ maybe he just loves your smell.

My cat does something similar... after she eats a couple of bites of food, she mimicks burying the food (like she digs in the litter). But she is just doing the motion on the kitchen floor. I think it's her way of saying she's "done" with what she was doing.

your cat is probably just doing something instinctual... protecting what is his. This posting actually helped me understand why my cat does what she does too! thanks.

cats cover things up when they don't like the smell (litter pan). maybe he doesn't like the smell of the food, but eats it because that's all there is to eat.

Your welcome. Um i guess it "varies" from cat to cat depending upon their breed or the enviorment/habitat there raised in or grew up around. I'd say that he just wants to play most times. Your cat just wants maybe to show you hes in the mood to fool around with your belongings. Its natural to cover his litter just because mostly all ( with a very small exception ) cover their "dumpings, feeces (sp) " Whichever you wanna call it.

My siamese will cover his stuff because he doesn't want his 'sister' to get it all before he comes back for seconds! (She's a rescue, and has never learned there's enough, so she eats hers and his and anything else that's on the floor)

this is a normal behavior for a male cat...they are very territorial..if you had a cat before him, the smell of the other at still there (only him can smeel it) and he is trying to protect what he thingk is his

he is doing what his ancestors did. by hiding his food he thinks he is protecting it and being Territorial nothing to worry about.
