it depends on the child the family the teachers and the school.
if your child is neat and clean wether the clothes are clean and well kept and has good self confidence they can and will be treated better than the others.
i was a child who wore handme downs and they always looked nice and were clean but they were not the colors or styles that matched my body or coloring it made me feel bad about myself but i had a lot of self confidence and was able to make it thru.
my own children often wore second hand clothes from friends relatives and the thrift stores(i always shopped early in the morning and often asked when new clothes were being put out) and then mixed these with inexpensive but good looking new clothes. and was sure to always tell my children that as long as they were happy with their clothes no one else mattered and also made sure that they had lots of self confidence about themselves and what they could and couldnt do. and they were all well liked and did well in school even my son who was always smaller than his peers and had several learning differences.

"Better" dressing is not about brand names or the latest fashion, it's about being clean and neat. And comfortable in what one wears. Good posture can cure a lot of ills, too. Ever notice how much better we all act when we know we look as good as we can?
There's a lot of good to be said for uniforms in school. Even if the school doesn't require them, it's not a bad idea for a student to adopt a certain clean and neat "look" of his or her own, with a few consistent simple wardrobe pieces.
One would think that the teachers, particularly, would respond well. And one would hope that peers -- and their parents --would eventually catch on.

I agree, I like you got my cloths from 2nd hand stores or at the very least I had new jeans...but not the name brand ones the popular kids wore. I was totally looked at differntly, now as an adult, I could care less, but man as a kid it hurt me cuz I totally feel as if I was made to feel that " I wasn't as good as the popular kids"

yea i no kids can be cruel and some kids that dress lower often do get made fun off and its not fair to the kids, but you can find good clothes at the salvation army and other thrift stores.

This is why alot of schools have uniforms now. Brand names are just a distraction from the classroom. You're there to learn, not show of what you have or have not. School is not a fashion show.
