my nephew is 5 going to 6 in novemeber and he still has accidents. he says that he doesn't feel when he has to go to the restroom and we have taken him to the doctor and eveyone says he's fine. we have tried everything from giving him prizes when he goes to the restroom and actually taking away some of his games when he doesn't go but nothing works. i was wondering what was wrong with him and what could we do about it?

i think that it would be helpful if he visited a child-psychologist
that kind of problems may reflect some kind of psychological problems

The statement that he doesn't "feel when he has to go" should be a red flag. Have his mom see a specialist.

If nothing medical comes up, then the best advice I can give and and the whole family is to lay off the pressure. Once he realizes that he can learn on his own terms, it will flow much easier.

The worst thing you can do is punish him, like taking away his games. You can't associate negative behaviour to learning to go to the bathroom. That makes it worse for them and it will actually hinder them from learning.

And, by the way, he's normal. Every child learns at their own pace. Just because he wasn't using the potty when he was 2 or 3 doesn't mean he is slow or unwilling. I've seen children not completely get it until they were 7. This is more common than you think.

1. STOP PUNISHING THE CHILD
2. DON'T COMPARE HIM TO OTHER CHILDREN OR SIBLINGS - this is worse than punishing him.
3. Make a game out of it. Put cheerios, froot loops or goldfish in the toilet and show them to him. Tell him it's a fun game to aim for them. (this also helps them keep it IN the toilet)
4. Talk to a urology specialist about him not "feeling" the need to go. This can be nothing and it can be serious. Don't take it lightly at this age.

Good luck.

Maybe your nephew has a weak bladder. It could also be hormonal. If you take him to a urologist you may get some answers.
There's a nasal spray that's hormonal that the doctors prescribe now for this sort of thing. It's used at night and it's used for bedwetting at night mostly.
Maybe you could ask them to do a bladder scan or an ultrasound or even an MRI. I hope you have medical insurance because these things are very costly. Good luck.

If the doctors are saying there is nothing physically "wrong" with your nephew, then it must be psychological?
I guess I'm perplexed that "he doesn't feel when he has to go to the restroom".

I wet my pants until I was nine years old. It wasn't anything that I did or that my parents did. The fact was just that my bladder hadn't matured and when I had to go, I had to go NOW. There wasn't a small feeling of having to go like most people get, it was just a sudden urge of "I HAVE to go!!" and was unable to hold it. My mom took me to several doctors and they all told her she'd have to wait it out. She did, and I'm now a perfectly normal (and dry! lol) adult. So, no worries. I'm sure he'll be fine. :)

Have y'all seen a urologist? If not that would be my first call. If you have a PPO for insurance you don't even have to have a referral from your PCP. If you do have an HMO, you will have to a referral from your PCP; though, if you tell them your concern, then will comply.

If y'all did all that, then, perhaps he just hasn't grown into his bladder yet. Sometimes kids are 8 or 9 before they stop wetting themselves because their bladders just haven't grown strong enough yet.

Good luck!

Maybe hes scared of the toilet, no seriolsly give me a chance theres a big hole that he could fall down and water that he could drown him, try making him use the potty again , just for a while until he is good and ready.

There may be a problem with the nerves that send that message; it's something older people get with neuropathy, given his age, it could be some minor neurological mis-fire, or it could be something serious. A neurologist could tell for sure.

Get him checked by a urologist. It probably isn't anything serious to worry about. Most kids ignore warning signs when they need to go until its too late.
