I don't know if you have enough funds and time to visit all the nice cities in America. But if you going to the East Coast, I'll stay with New York and Boston.
New York is a must see city , great for shopping and food. Lots of crowd and things to see.
Boston is a classy city. You get the best seafood in Boston, great museums, lots of culture. The best walking city in America.

If you are going to the West Coast, go to San Francisco and San Diego and Las Vegas.(you might need a car in the West Coast)

You could visit Yahoo-Travel-Reviews. Enter the names of the city and see what other travelers have to say about the city.

Depends on the time of year, and your interests.

San Francisco- Prettiest large city

NYC- Hustle and bustle

Washington DC- Very pretty, especially in April. Lots of monuments, great food, free museums.

Smaller towns:

Savannah, Georgia- Beautiful old south.

Boulder, Colorado- Beautiful Rocky Mountains.

Santa Fe- Wonderful desert southwest.

Tucson/Tombstone- Easy to get around. "Old west" feeling is captured.

Maybe, if you had extra time

Chicago- Lots of tall buildings. Really dumb people though.

Seattle- Pretty coast line. Not that unique. Streets roll up at 5pm

Philadelphia- A lot of effort for minimal gain

St Louis- Arch is impressive. Little else to do.

Miami- Dangerous, but interesting

Avoid:
Boston- Expensive, overrated

LA- Crowded, expansive, not worth it

Houston- Smoggy, nothing to see

NYC is a must. The center of everything. Also Philly is a great city, with tons of history and more compact. You can walk everywhere if you stay in center city or old city.
