I am 5'8", 190 pounds, female...what is the maximum amount of weight I could lose in about 40 days(month and 10 days)..I know it needs to be safe, but I know it's possible to lose more than 2 lbs a week cause I have seen people do it(biggest loser, they have proffesional coaches) so what do you think..how many pounds is possible? and what do I do to get there? I have been eating 1200 cals a day and working out on my elliptical(interval training) for 30 minutes 6 days a week...is that enough? Thanks for all your help! :-)

You can only lose 2 lbs healthily in a week, but thats after the first month. During that first month you can lose quite a bit of weight because you are not only losing fat but also all of your water weight.

Losing more than 2 lbs in the first couple of weeks might be ok, but it is definitely not healthy on the long run (unless you are extremely obese). If you lose more than 2 lbs, a lot of that will be muscle mass, which in turn will reduce your metabolism and cause your body to store more food as fat.

Eat 5-6 small meals a day, cut sugary foods, add protein and good fats and you could can lose about 15-20 lbs in 40 days. Also try to incorporate weight training along with cardio. If you don't weights, try body weight exercises like push ups, body weight squats, etc to increase muscle mass.

First I have to respond to the first post above. Do not try to eat less than 1200 calories! You will lose muscle mass, and that's the absolute worst thing you can do if trying to lose weight. YOu will be fatter than you were when you started.

True, some people on the show lost up to 20 lbs in a week, and some only lost 1 pound. To lose more than 2 pounds a week you have to exercise an extreme amount, and you have to be supervised. You have to vary the type of exercise you do during the routine, or you will overtax certain muscles and parts of your body. That's why they say trying to lose more than 2 pounds a week is just not realistic, unless you have a personal trainer.

There are several reasons why losing more than 2 lbs per day is not recommended. Losing weight too quickly may leave loose skin that hangs.

What you are doing is good. However, I'd increase the cardio to 45min to an hour, 4-5 days a week to increase your metabolism. Adding low weight training will help in shaping your muscles.

Regarding your diet, try to avoid carbs (simple sugar as well as complex ones from rice, potato, pasta, etc.) and sodas...especially at night/dinner. Portion size is important.

As you increase your metabolism, you may actually need to eat more, which also helps burn weight.

OK Camus is trying to make you ill, do not reduce calorie intake and up exercise, do you want to collapse? Why is what you weigh important, is it for sky diving, hot air ballooning why is there a weight limit. You should be focusing on measurements, remember that muscle weighs more than fat. If you want to lose weight purely for looks, then weight is not the issue, measurements and shape are the issue. Make sure you eat plenty of health foods, do not cut out essential fatty acids. Don't eat any carbs after 6pm, but do eat them during the day, your body will need them as fuel for the amount of exercise you're going to be doing, do not miss out breakfast, eat as soon as you can in the morning it will kick start your metabolism and that will help you to be trimmer. You do need to up your exercise, not necessarily how often in fact you could cut back to 4 times a week but you need to be doing between an hour and 2 hours a day, try varying it, go for a run, swim, hill walk, whatever takes your fancy, but keep it interesting so you don't lose motivation.
To lose a 1lb a day does not seem particularly unhealthy if you're hell bent on doing it, but remember rapid weight loss results in loose skin and stretch marks, so be careful.

GOOD LUCK

If you want to lose weight you have to work out a helluva lot more than 30 minutes for 6 days a week. You need a good solid hour to hour and a half on the elliptical for seven days a week. You may lose about 5-8 lbs a week that way, but only at first. As you lose weight the rate of your weight loss will decrease. You should also bring your calorie intake down if you can. Down to about 1000. I was 170lbs and am 5'6" and I lost 15 in two weeks eating salad and dry cereal and working out for an hour a day. I also have not gained the weight back.

Losing that much weight that quickly is not healthy, and will certainly not be maintainable.

My sister lost 80 lbs and took her 1-1/2 years. It was a slow process but the weight will stay off because she followed a good eating plan (weight watchers - not a fad diet) and she exercised regularly.
