I have just taken a teaching post in Liverpool & I am currently covering 2 subjects. As local history is not really my forte. I am setting the class an assignment on 'Famous Locals'. I don't want to cover the usual people associated with L'pool such as The Beatles - as they are very well known, or Footballers as there may be a conflict on who supports who. I am more keen on famous people that they may have come in to contact with ie. a local tv celeb. Basically someone well known & interesting enough for them to want to research!
If anyone can suggest names to put to them, or where I can find out about famous Liverpool people, Please help me (and year 9!).
Thank you so much
Claire xx.

Club no but I admit I used to support Brazil when I was a little kid cause of Ronaldo. It was during the WC 2002. Then I grew up and started supporting England in tournaments since Malta never qualifies and I have some English blood in me. edit: When I first say football I remember it was an Italian league game. I know Juventus were playing the other team I don't know. Ever since then I started liking football and Edgar Davids was my fav player but I didn't like Juventus kit and I never understood the Italian language. Then later on when I grew up ( maybe I was 5 or 6 ) I got more into football and I selected Chelsea as my team. Blue was always my fave colour and the Lion was always my fave animal.

try here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:People_from_Liverpool

not only does it list famous and semi-famous people from liverpool, all the names are links so you can click one and get detailed information about them rather than investigating at a different site.

for example, there is frank hornby - inventor of meccano. keith chegwin, les dennis, several members of atomic kitten, william ewart gladstone (ex prime minister), pete best, ron atkinson, many footballers etc etc.

for another list, which you will have to look into elsewhere for background information on them, see here:
http://www.liverpoolcityportal.co.uk/history/famous_scoucers.html

that one has mel chisholm (spice girls), ken dodd, kenny everett, billy fury, and so on and so forth.

EDIT: mike myers (austin powers) who was suggested below isn't from liverpool he was born in canada, his parents are however originally from liverpool.

a lot of the famous celebs are from the 60s to 70s when there was an expolsion of scouser culture. since the 90s there's been one for the mancunians. since then (which is the time era that will be more relevant for your target age group)

tom baker - voice of little britain and former dr who
krishnan guru-murthy - presenter of channel 4 news
