Is it alright to record a phone conversation if they record you? Example: whenever I call a company / customer service they usually say "this message is being recorded for (whatever reason they give).

I have been lied to in the past by a company who recorded the message but I can't prove the lie unless I record it also.

I record all my conversation, but you got to tell them that your are doing it! when I pick up the phone I say automatically "hello, you are on a recorded line"...and then they are all very nice and polite...I love it!

I don't think it's illegal if you have a legitimate reason to record a conversation that may be used later to prove a statement, track a criminal, or use as evidence in a court of law. However, I think you do need special equipment and/or permission to do that.

The purpose of companies recording conversations is not to invade your privacy, but to determine whether or not their representatives are being informative and courteous. They say for "quality control", and they let you know ahead of time. This is perfectly legitimate, and they do it all the time. I would check with an attorney or police department to find out if your purpose in recording a conversation is legal, just for your own protection.

You have to let THEM know when they come on the line and I would record you saying it to them so they can't say that they didn't know.
