I just recently got into pistol shooting. I was looking into buying a pistol, and currently looking at a few, and I was wondering about a accessory on the Colt Combat Commander, what the piece is called on the grips, here is a picture, it's the third picture down the page on the right http://www.sightm1911.com/lib/review/colt_combat_commander.htm I was wonderin' if you could be able to tell me what it's called, and if you can use it on other guns than the colt combat commander.

I believe its called a dovetail

It actually looks like a safety device. You have to have the gun in your hand for the firing pin to go. If you drop the gun the hammer will not enagge the firing pin and go off accidentally

You are looking at a grip safety. This device has to be depressed by the web of your hand while gripping the pistol of the trigger will not engage. Being that the M1911 style Colts and their copies were single action semi-autos, it's a good safety device. You will not see them on the Ballister-Molina version because those were cheap Argentine rip-offs.

I don't open these sites, too many viruses. But, the Colt Commander is a good piece. Ask your dealer about the accessory when you buy one. You would most likely have to get it through him/her anyway.

all I see is the grips. If you mean the wood part thenn that is the grips. each pistol has a different size hand set due to the frame and model. you can email me with anything else if you like.

are you referring to the safety on the rear of the grip? it is there so that it won't misfire if you drop the gun. I have never seen it on guns other then the 1911 though.

Barret, your ignorance is outstanding. Try to answer questions that you actually know the answers to, moron.

Cool... one more "irresponsible anti-citizen" threatening the liberals' concept of security in the Western World!!! And a woman at that....

Welcome to the 2nd Amendment, and good shotting!

addendum:

By the way that is, as I've been corrected by one who has never hit the wrong keys, "SHOOTING"

(I guess the government has yet to get around to demand I spell check ALL correspondence.... even that of my leisure time.)

god knows got it. It's a dovetail, sometimes beavertail. Its part of the grip safety that has to be pressed in order to fire.

Check the statistics....you're 20 times more likely to kill a family member than an intruder.
And learn to spell dumbass.
Shooting....not "shotting". There's a spell check for christ sake!
