Each state has different laws regarding the use of public schools for home educated students. Here in Texas, I wouldn't even bother to try to use the public school facilities for anything (classes, sports, nothing) because I know they'd say no. However, many private (especially parochial) schools allow homeschoolers to participate on their teams (sports and academic), as well as be in band, choir, etc. So I'd say, check with the private schools near you.

If you can't find anything, maybe you could start a homeschool sports group - I'll bet there are others who are interested.

You need to get the information from the district itself (usually you can find it on their websites) and check your state regs as well. Sadly, very few states allow homeschool kids to participate in school sponsered activites. Good luck

Schools in some states are required to. Check out HSLDA for assistance if they aren't.
