There is a delicate balance of nature that has taken millions if not billions of years to acheive. To suddenly shave off all the life-giving, oxygen producing, habitat providing forests from the planet throws off this balance greatly. All living parts of Earth are dependent on each other to survive. It's like a person cutting off his/her legs to feed his/herself. With lower oxygen levels in our atmosphere, mankind is becoming sick. Increased disease, cancer, asthma, starvation, etc. will slowly swing the balance back to where humans have less of an impact. OR we can stop the deforestation and begin reforestation and restore the balance that way making all healthier.

so we can try to keep some of the trees the world has left?
so we can know which trees will help the environment most?
so we can invent new medicines and cures from them?
so we know which trees can survive where?
so we can learn the history of an area where trees grow (like rainfall over the last 50 years etc.)?
