It depends on what the requirements of the paper are, so you're probably best to run your topic by your teacher or professor first, but the idea sounds promising.
If it's a psychology class, then they're probably wanting research not so much on *how* pill manufacturers market and advertise, but *why* they market and advertise the way they do. In other words, what goes on in the mind of the consumer that *makes* someone want to buy weight-loss pills? There should be plenty of research available online as to why someone would want to buy the pills, and how companies market to those physical and emotional needs/desires. Good luck!

Do you have a weight problem? That's the first question you will have to answer. Whether or not the teacher likes your idea will have less to do with how "cool" it sounds and more to do with how to word it.
You will usually find that whatever affects you emotionally and deeply will translate into a good paper for your reader. So, while you think about the best topic, think about what experience you have, and how advertising has affected you personally. Then, write about what you know.
I took this class, or one like it, and I chose a subject that I knew would be unique. I got an A on the paper, not because my subject was so ideal, but because I wrote about it thoroughly and in an interesting way. Do that and you will have a great paper.

You are better off looking at something like TV advertising and looking at the use of sex, "pester power" & self-image. There is a wealth of information out there on the subject and the techniques used and many and varied; for example the sale of "loss leaders" and layout in supermarkets etc..ad infinitum.

Well, sure, you can.
I've always found it interesting that so many fast-food places seem to use the color red (think: McDonald's, BK, Wendy's, KFC, Pizza Hut, Papa John's, etc.). There has to be some psychological connection between that color and hunger. I bet if you examined colors used in advertising in particular industries, you might find some trends there.

You could write about how ads for the same products differ by locations and what the psychological implications are.
