i dont think its a good idea for four year olds to be sleeping in the afternoon.i think if teachers allowed this in britian we'd have a riot!!! naps are fine if the wee ones feeling poorly or having an off day, but i really dont believe its of any benefit to them at other times.... what happens when they start school???

Yes they are required to rest for two hours, but that does not mean that they are napping for that two hours straight. They might fall asleep 30 min to an hour after you lay them down, but if they do not take an nap you can give them a book to read either on their met or at the table so they want awake the other kids that are napping.

My son is 3 and a 1/2, we live in CA and they put kids down for about an hour. if they sleep - great; if not - at least they rest a little bit, stay quiet. all books that I read about toddlers say that they may nap for about an hour a day, or skip their nap completely which is also fine.
I think for 4 year old 2 hour nap is WAY too much.
It seems to me that it's just lazy teachers in your pre-school that just want more time for themselves.

There is no law that can require children to nap.
However it may be the schools policy to put the kids down for a two hour nap, particularly if they are there from 7:00am
