Don't use vinegar: that will soften the nails - we used to soak eggs and wishbones in vinegar as kids to make them soft and rubbery.

Dipping your fingers in hot sauce, etc., may work but it's messy and unsanitary - not a good idea if you're handling paperwork or schoolwork as you'll leave residue on the paper.

Nail polish may work for you but I found myself actually picking at them even more.

The method that worked best for me was "weaning" myself off chewing them about 30 years ago. Start by NOT chewing on your ring finger and center finger. Once you have noticeable growth on those 4, stop chewing on your thumb nails. Follow through with your index fingers then the pinky. It takes a little while but it trains your mind and auto-reflexes, still allowing you the indulgence of your habit but gradually breaking you of it.

Good luck!

There is nasty tasting nail polish you can buy so when you put your finger in your mouth the first time you'll remember how nasty it tasted and hopefully stop yourself next time. Or just think everytime you have your finger in your mouth when was the last time you washed your hands and how many nasty things youve touched. Or there is always acrylic nails that are extremly hard to bite off. That's what worked for me I wore them long enough and eventually I did'nt have the urge anymore and now I have nice natural nails

Treat yourself to a really good manicure every two weeks until your nails grow out and you can take care of them yourself. Going to all that trouble and expense will make you think twice about biting your nails, and after a few months you won't have the urge anymore.

I'm not a fan of acryllic nails, I really think natural ones look better. But I just got a set to break myself of the habit of nail-biting. You just can't chew the fake ones and a couple of months with them on gets me out of the habit.

You can also try tricks like getting a nice manicure to remind yourself to keep your hands nice, or that bad-tasting stuff you paint your nails with.

Well looks like you are in the same boat that I am. I have been biting my nails since I was five years old and never stopped!!! Maybe what we should do is seriously look at our nails under a microscope and see all the littly tasty critters we are eating everyday. That might help.

get acrylic nails and you will stop. It hurts whe you take those off so it will keep you from bitting them. My little borther who is now 23 used to have the same problem as a child. When he turned8 he got a really bad stomach infection from bitting his dirty nails so much. He had surgery to remove a huge portion of his stomache. Don't let this happent to you. You hands have lots and lots of germs!!!
