U need to be working under someone who can direct and teach you. You can not learn to tattoo via the web and TV.. it is not a correspondence course. Quit slinging ink till you find a teacher.

Yes, 2 machines is needed in case one machine would stop working (such as the contact points going bad or the coils burnt up on a machine). It's always good to have a spare. Then too they have 2 machines one for outlining and one for shading.

You really did get some bazaar answers (needles being dull) didn't you.

Tattoo machines are set up differently, some are set as shadier, some as liners, and some are made to do both. That is why.

the needle could become dull- or for more intricate tattoos the artist could require a single needle or multiple needles for shading
