Manmade. All of it. There is no proof..the bible is manmade as well. Religion was formed to control people. In some ways good and someways just plain sneaky like using fear.

Vedic Scriptures state that Religion means the Instruction of God himself.
Just as a person who creates a machine gives a user mannual of how to use the machine properly. Similarly God who created this world gave us instruction of how to live properly in this creation. These instructions are basis of any religion.
By Historical Facts, you mean Archeological evidences. But we have to understand that Archeology is a very ineffective way of finding out the past. Just by digging, you may get some thing and try to imagine a Story that best takes into account all the already existing paradigms. But it is still a guess work.
You have more belief in words of Diggers, but they have hardly dug a small fraction of the world. They have access to only those things that where able to survive the destruction of nature. But Most of the things don’t.
So if your science and methods of getting the facts are not efficient, how can you ask for proof to be given only as per the digging process?
Just consider the example, if you don’t have your own mother to testify who is your father, you cannot even find your own father who gave birth to you. You cannot go around every man in the world and test his DNA. What to talk of if your Mother lies and says that your father is dead? And here you are asking about proofs that are thousands of years old?
The Proof are the Truthful people who pass on the knowledge. If any of these people where cheaters and changed the facts, then we have no other way to find out.
Just as if the archeologist is a cheater and ignores all the discoveries in the site and chooses only those that suit his theory, or even if his findings are not accepted by other Authority that is interested in supporting their own theories, we have no way to find it out.
The only way to find out about religion, then would be to try out ourselves and see the results. But God does give us assurance that when this knowledge becomes lost then he again reestablishes the knowledge.

Religion is as old as humans.
In the beginning, it seems that Humans believed in a Creator/God; later on, they got confused and lost all faith..they had to invent a God they could see...so they turned to Paganism and made their own God...some also worshiped the Sun, Moon and stars. Then there was a revival of Monotheism when God made himself known to Abraham.
If you truly are looking for knowledge and Historical proof, you need to spend five years in the library and read all that is written by great writers and scholars concerning God.
It seems that you have already made up your mind that there are no Historical proofs...so why are you asking?
Or are you looking for a fight?
Pick the ring; I will kick your big ugly butt any day of the week. Coward!

I don't have historical facts, but I do have your imagination.
Imagine being one of the cave men, or just an early man, and then the sky goes all dark, and it sounds as if someone is screaming in anger(a thunderstorm), what would you think? Would you not think that maybe there was this higher form somewhere up there becoming angry? Or how bout when it rained, would you not think someone was crying?
Humans by nature are curious beings, so really, religion was the early form of science, trying to explain the world..

You should read Richard Dawkins new book "The God Delusion" He has some very interesting information on why religion has become important.
It is most likely that humans are predisposed to believe in a "god" because natural selection would favor children that listen to their parents and elders without question. Children that did not listen to the advice of the parents may have been eaten by a predator. One can see how this trait can be exploited.

Religion came from that part in each of us that needs to hold onto a stronger higher force, especially in times of great stress.
I don't believe it's necessary to believe that certain people actually existed. Learn from the story, it has a moral, it has a spiritual truth.
Fact is, you'll never have all the facts you need to know for certain what anybody said actaully came from the person who supposedly said it. Too long ago, witnesses are dead, only a bit of archeological evidence evidences exists.
But religion is real and it's force controls politics, policy, and regions of people from small families to large countries. And it comes from who we are. There are, after all, no atheists in war, or so they say.

Religion explains the unexplainable. In cavemen's times they attributed everything from fire to the migration of animals to gods. Even then preists or what they called medicine men used religion as a way to control the people. Historically, (and you can read any history book to find this) religion is the best and easiest way to gain power over the masses.

wow u are good by using one question to ask for 2.
Why is religion important?
--Religion is important to caltivate oneself to become a good man/woman by his act and speak.
What historical facts do you use to prove that things really occurred or that people really existed?
--script, statue from the past...
Script - All his teaching is written inside the books not 1 book but a lot.....(no one have sure a free time writting these book except the people that believe in him)
Statue - Olden civilisation commemorate the life of a great man who is dead by making statue, thus worship by all...(why no one make statue of me? coz I am not the great man)

historically, I have no clue. But there IS a section of the brain that controls religious experience. Stimulating this area of the brain caused subjects to report various religious experiences. So you could say it evolved because religion helps us abide by laws and morals, thus preserving society, or that God created it so we could get to know him.

Dunno why religion is important, but I do know that it seems preposterous to not believe in a creator God just from looking at the world around you. How living things need other living things for survival.
The mechanics of the living cell is amazing in itself!
I could come up with examples of how awesome God is all day long.
