I have finally decided that I want to get a shih tzu. I found a reputable breeder and I'm loving her dogs. The only problem is that I keep on hearing that shih tzu's aren't good dogs and they have alot of health problems. I went on the internet and did some research, but I need to hear from people that are shih tzu owners. Tell me about their temperment, health issues, (if any) and whatever else you think I need to know before I purchase a shih tzu.

Shih Tzu's are wonderful dogs! The most important thing is to start with a great breeder. You said you have one, but from my personal experience I highly recommend www.arizonashihtzu.com. Yes, they ship nationwide.

Arizona Shih Tzu are impeccable Shih Tzu breeders. The puppy I purchased from them is everything I hoped he would be and much more. They are very warm and friendly people and were happy to answer all my questions and accommodate me. They extended an open invitation for me to visit them and their Shih Tzus. I saw first-hand the tender loving care they give to their dogs. I went to meet Jeri and the mamma and papa Shih Tzu. I spent a half-hour sitting the floor being showered with sweet Shih Tzu kisses. All the adult dogs have wonderful temperaments. I also visited when my puppy, Milo, was four weeks old. At the time there were also other litters in their kitchen nursery. It was obvious that the puppies were in excellent hands and got lots of love and attention.

From the day Milo was born, Jeri began emailing photos and updates. She responded promptly to all my emails. She really made me feel that I was included in the process while waiting to bring Milo home. Her expertise with Shih Tzus is second to none. Her advice has been very helpful.

My veterinarian raves about Milo and tells me that he is a very healthy and high quality Shih Tzu. My family and I absolutely adore Milo and his sweet personality. When we brought him home at 8 weeks old he was already well socialized and obediently used training pads. We are very blessed with our new family member and we owe it all to Arizona Shih Tzu.

With careful breeding and lots of love Shih Tzu's have wonderful temperaments. Like all toy breeds they can have dental issues. This can be resolved by routine brushing and regular vet visits. Shih Tzus can be difficult to housetrain, but with consistant training you will get good results.

My Milo is now a year old and such an important part of my family. He is an absolute sweetheart. He lives to be with us and is such a joy. He is fun for the kids to play with, but yet content to cuddle with my husband and I as we watch TV at night. He is a wonderful companion.

I am not a Shih Tzu owner, but I have been a dog groomer for years. 8 out of 10 shih tzu's are sweet and loveable, but they do need a lot of lifetime socialization. They can be difficult to train, and require DAILY grooming (brushing/combing) and bi monthly haircuts, especially if you can't keep up with the brushing.
Ensure that your breeder provides you with a written health guarantee, as Shih Tzu's are either extremely healthy or filled with health problems, there really is no grey area. Be sure to check your breeder out with the AKC or CKC.
Enjoy your puppy!

We had a Shih tzu named Jenny. She just passed away this past March. She was 12. She was the smartest dog I have ever known. Her health was always good except for some allergies but that can happen with any breed. She was extremely loving and loyal. She loved everyone who came to ouir home and knew them by name when you asked her where's so & so, she would pick them right out. As much love as you give them, you will get it back 10 times. I could go on and on. Good Luck!

Unlike with human pregnancies, which last approximately nine months, the average gestation time for a shih tzu is only nine weeks. Because this is such a short period of time, it is important for the owner to watch for signs of pregnancy in order to prepare and provide care for the dog as soon as possible. Conception Conception is the beginning stage of pregnancy. This is the moment when the shih tzu first becomes pregnant. Usually, physical signs of pregnancy will not happen for a few weeks. However, shih tzu behavior may change almost immediately. If you are expecting your shih tzu to become pregnant, watch for any unusual behavior, such as changes in energy levels. A dog that is usually calm may become energetic, while one who is usually lively may become lethargic. Weeks 1-2 During the first two weeks of pregnancy, not much will change for your dog. You may notice she is swollen in her nipples or vulva. It is OK during this time for her activity levels to continue as normal. If you have other dogs, it is fine for her to play with them. Weeks 3-9 This time period is when you will see the greatest changes taking place in your dog. Her tummy will become increasingly rounder and her nipples will swell more. Restrict activity during these weeks. Daily walks are recommended, but no rough play. If other dogs are present, they should not be allowed to play with the pregnant shih tzu. The shih tzu should have a quiet, comfortable, safe area available to her at all times where she can go to rest. Birth A normal temperature for a shih tzu is 101 degrees Fahrenheit. This temperature will drop about two degrees right before the shih tzu goes into labor. Create a whelping area for her and move her there immediately after her temperature drops. The birthing process is messy, so many owners will lay down plastic and cover this with clean towels or blankets for the dog to lay on. Typically the shih tzu will do all the work, such as licking the sac off the puppy and breaking the umbilical cord. If not, use your fingers to simulate the licking of the mother, and use a string to cut the umbilical cord by tying a knot; for this step, it is a good idea to have someone experienced with dog births present.

Hi, I work in a vet clinic and own a shih tzu. They are cute lovable little creatures. Very loyal and true lap dogs. Keep the hair in the ear canal plucked, Some groomers do this for you. It is important and the hair acts as a trap for bacteria. Add heat, moisture, the natural yeast in the ear canal and it is a recipe for infection. Also, have the groomer clear the anal glands regularly as small dogs are prone to impacted anal glands. Nails need clipping twice monthly, hair needs trimming regularly, so unless you are confident in being able to do it yourself, a groomer on a monthly basis is required. Shih Tzu dogs are high maintenance as far as that stuff goes. Start brushing the teeth right away with an animal toothpast, (you can get beef flavour etc), human toothpaste is not good for dogs. Perhaps start a regimen of chewing dental treats early to form a habit. Small dogs can get nasty teeth and require dentals which can add up in cost. also, have your pet walked with a harness as opposed to a collar. Small breed dogs have sensitive tracheas and can get seriously hurt if pulled to hard with a collar on. Using a harness for walks is the safest and your pup will get used to it quickly.
Good luck! Have fun with your new pet.

Hi, I understand that you are looking for some advice or resources to help fully train your dog or fix behavior problems. If a professional dog trainer is not an option at this time, or if you want to trt training your dog on your own (a great way to bond), I'd suggest you https://biturl.im/aU0sk

A friend recommened it to me a few years ago, and I was amazed how quickly it worked, which is why I recommend it to others. The dog training academy also has as an excellent home training course.

I'm doing basic obedience right now. My trainer hasn't once handled my dog. He has shown me how to handle my dog by using his own dog but that's about it. The reasoning is that I need to learn how to do these basic corrections and what not myself. Learn more https://tinyurl.im/WC38C

I have never considered sending my dog away for training. I guess I haven't found that much of a problem with him to even think about it.

Again, it may also have to do with the level of training you are looking for etc. No idea lol. I'm not a trainer. I think a first time dog owner needs to learn simple commands and how to handle their dog themselves as well.

Most dog owners want their dogs to be trained; In fact, many dog lovers, including Gary Shmerling, see to it that their pets undergo a series of effective dog training. Although they are inherently smart, not all dog breeds can be easily trained. Many owners are having a hard time training their pets with even the simplest of commands. While some dogs are fond of the training process, and the treats given, most breeds need proper guidance and consistent dog training.

Dog training can take so much of your time and effort as well as money, and of course - patience or understanding. However, your efforts will become fruitful if done the right and fun way. Training your dog need not be harsh; you can't even expect to see immediate results. But the best thing is, there are so many ways on how you can effectively and easily train your dog.

1. Information is always the key.
Be aware of the characteristics of your dog breed as such information can help you determine the kind and level of training needed. You must be knowledgeable with the basics if you want to successfully train your dog, especially if you chose to do the training all by yourself. Of course, research is your only tool in terms of gathering the right and sufficient dog training information.

2. Lengthen your patience. Give sufficient time and effort.
If you're moody and impatient, then it's best to have somebody else train your dog. Your patience and your effort are what your pet badly need. Without those two, you can't be consistent; and that's also essential for an effective dog training. You must first evaluate yourself whether you are qualified to train a dog or not so that unfavorable results can be avoided.

It is a must that you start training your dog while he or she is still young, particularly when it comes to obedience training. By doing so, you can have your dog avoid unpleasant and aggressive behaviors. Moreover, don't let your emotions spoil the process.

3. Discipline well. Be reasonable.
Learn when to reward and when to reprimand your dog's behavior, not just during the training but also when interacting with your family. Discipline the right way and do not spoil or punish your dog excessively. You can ignore or deprive your dog with some treats but should not, as much as possible, hit him/her with a stick or even a rolled magazine. Physical punishment would only result to disobedience and aggression. Efficacy can be achieved if dog training is done in a consistent manner, with care and reason.

4. Use the right resources.
Find out which dog training tools are suitable for your dog breed. Make sure you have a dog leash and collar as well as muzzles, crates and clickers. Know where and how to start with such tools.

Train on the best places. Look for a particular location wherein your dog can focus with the training; avoid distracting places like a crowded park. For starters, it is wise to do the training on your backyard; however, the location may still depend on the kind of training you want your dog to accomplish.

5. When all else fails or if you really don't have the time to successfully finish the kind of training you intend for your beloved dog, then go for the aid of a professional dog trainer. If you want the best dog training, then be prepared to make the investment.
