I have searched endlessly and came up with a lot, but they sound too feminine or they are more than 3 syllables long, which is hard\too long for calling a puppy.

I have one of these. He is not a puppy anymore. He weighs about 130 pounds and since we knew he was going to be a big dog, we named him Diesel. I think he could pull a plow if he wanted too.

I personally think that Congo is a good name. I can't really think of anything else that sounds African. You may wish to consider thinking outside of the box, like looking around at what other people have named their animals. You could do a search for other Ridgeback owners, and see what they've named their puppies. Or you could even go a little further, check some of the zoos and animal agencies and see what they've named their African animals, like elephants, lions, zebra etc. Many zoos are online now and offer bios of on their residents, and a lot of zoos like to stick with names similar to the region the animals were from. You may also want to check this site: http://www.lowchensaustralia.com/names/africannames.htm that has a lot of different names.
