First of all, great observation. Now, to answer your question. Yes, it is possible to have allergies to one specific thing like shrimp and yet be able to tolerate other sea food even if it is similar.
Allergies are immune reactions (reaction that the body defense mechanism puts up to fight infections etc.). However when someone has food allergies, it is due to a miss directed immune reaction. Even though a lot is known about allergies now, unfortunately the only cure is abstinence.

Hypersensitivity reactions (allergies) start out to be mild and increase in intensity and speed as you expose yourself to more and more allergens (in your husbands case shrimp). If you know that he is allergic to shrimp, you should be very careful about not letting him eat it any more, because the more he eats it the more severe will the reaction be and at time could be fatal.

There are immunoglobulins (specific defense proteins) that are generated against very specific things (in this case shrimp). These are constantly present on all the mucosal surfaces within the gastro intestinal tract. As soon as your husband takes a bite at the shrimp, a reaction (WAR) starts in his mouth. This is what causes the reaction.

If you found out that he dose not react to crab and lobster then he is ok eating that. But if he finds even the slightest symptoms of allergy it is best to stop immediately.

Yes, and that's why I am here...I am wondering how it is that I have never had a problem eating shrimp until maybe about 2 years ago...I am currently 40 years old and I love cooking seafood cuisines here in New Orleans...I'm jsut not willing to accept this sudden change in my ability to tolerate shrimp...I am use to just eating what I eat and it is bothersome having to think that I cant eat it...It's a developed habit...For me, it is only previously frozen shrimp...I can still eat crawfish, regular fish like trout and snapper and all, I absolutely can not eat any catfish, I can eat oysters and crabs...But I love my shrimp pastas, boiled shrimp, shrimp etouffe, and all...I mean I feel I need to get to the bottom of this and soon because my quality of life is jsut now being affected and I want things like how it was before...So, I am scheduling an appointment with an allergist to get some results...I mean now it's shrimp, later it will be something else...I have to get this in check immediately...

YES!! I am VERY allergic to mussels however I can eat shrimp, lobster, crab etc. And you can become allergic over time. You can eat shrimp or whatever all your life and then all of the sudden get an allergy to it and the more you eat it the more allergic you become. Maybe though it was just a bad batch. I would have him get a skin test

For years I was a shrimp fanatic, stuffed with crabmeat or just plain shrimp cocktail. I am 65 and the last 5 years I have developed an allergy to shrimp. The first episode resulted in hives on my face the second was another greater bout of hives. I can eat fish and crab no problem but to stay on the safe side I avoid shrimp and always carry a bottle of Benadryl just incase.

Then it may not be the seafood you're allergic to. Maybe it's what chemicals they are using either on the seafood or in the seafood. Sorry to say, there is nothing you can take to suppress the allergy. Are you allergic to iodine and eggs? How about sulfur drugs? If so, then you are allergic to shellfish. If not, then it's PROBABLY the chemicals they use. Make sure you have benadryl around in case you do have an allergic reaction to any of the above. Good luck.

I am allergic to shrimp but can eat all other shellfish just fine. I believe I became allergic after taking medication for my thyroid. The iodine in the medication is what caused the allergy. I just pray I don t become allergic to everything else. I do miss my shrimp very much but I like to breath even more.

Yes, because they are not the same kinds of animals, even though they are related in the circle of life. I would take him to a doctor or do some further research and find out why. Could it perhaps not be the food itself, but the way its prepared? Look into it.
