Jesse James, his girlfriend Lonestar, and their gang used to hide out in my relatives' field in Kansas. My relatives were the Elmer and Elwood Park, two brothers that lived together after their mother died. Elmer and Elwood died in an auto accident in 1989. They were both in their 90s. They told me that Jesse James and his gang used to pillage anything they could get from them (the Parks). Everytime they would ride their horses across the Parks' lawn, Lonestar would would grab whatever laundry they had hanging on the clothes line. They routinely had federal marshals on their property looking for Jesse James and his gang.
My relatives the Park brothers were an amazing couple of guys themselves. They were the first to build a mono-wing airplane (which is virtually the only thing you see now days), they invented the semi truck (but never received credit for it, somebody else stole their design and claimed credit), and they designed several components for cars that are commonly used today. They were always very poor so when they wanted something, they would make it. They were amazing engineers and were never given credit for much of what they did. Their picture albums were absolutely incredible. They had a barn full of absolutely amazing things that they built, including their semi-truck, their mono-wing airplane, and several other gadgets and components that they had build over the years. Unfortunately, the barn and everything in it burned down. They lived tough lives and were always very humble, very nice men. All these years later I still miss them.

That depends on who you ask. Former Confederate soldiers praised him and he is credited with the rise of Confederate politics in Missouri. During the Progressive Era, he was seen as a Robin Hood-like figure. Allan Pinkerton's raid on the James family farm only helped the public sympathize with Jesse and his gang.
