A friend of mine has had a very large swelling in the right side of her neck for almost a year. Yesterday, she saw a doctor, and he said it had to be removed immediately. What could be causing this? She is scheduled for a CT scan later this week, but I am very worried. Could it be cancer?

It could be cancer, but it could be a lot of other things as well. Since it's not your condition then you're going to have to wait until your friend finds out what it is.

I was in a similar situation myself 12 months ago and it may take a while to get a firm diagnosis. If it is cancer (and it was for me(thyroid) ) then it's not necessarily a death sentence.

It sounds like it could be a tumor, but not necessarily a cancerous or malignant tumor that spreads to other areas. Was a biopsy taken? That would tell.

BTW, if you have a swelling, don't wait a year before having a doctor check it out.

The term nontoxic goiter refers to enlargement of the thyroid which is not associated with overproduction of thyroid hormone or malignancy. The thyroid can become very large so that it can easily be seen as a mass in the neck

A swollen lymph node does not equal cancer. I would say that if you have been ill recently it is most likely due to that as your lymph nodes in your neck often swell when ill, especially if you have symptoms like a runny nose and/or sore throat.

Honey, that sounds like a swollen lymph gland and there are a number of things that can cause it. Don't get ahead of yourself in assuming it's cancer because it may not be. I'm glad she got it checked out.

It could be cancer, it could be a clogged gland, it could be a lot of things. But it is no use getting worried about it until the doctor makes a diagnosis.

It could just be a tumor and can be removed without any further difficulties. Don't start worrying prematurely, let the doctor do what needs to be done and support your friend.

I agree don't get so worried and with health issues maybe your friend will not share everthing right away with you
Just hope for the best and make sure you are there when she does come to you to talk

Yes, it could be. She really shouldn't have waited a year to have it looked at. It could be lymphoma.
