Not really; I've played with puppies and they've nibbled at my fingers before, but that just means that they're teething.

No, I can't say I've actually bitten my dog, but when they are doing something wrong or trying to show dominance I do use my hand like a mouth and hurry and grab and let of the back of their neck. The reason I do this is because alpha dogs will bite the other dogs on the back of their neck to discipline them or show dominance. Biting is one way dogs use to communicate. So I do it like a bite with my hand to show them I am dominant and they actually respond. I didn't think they would at first so I just started doing this about a week ago and it's amazing how well it works. They stop what they are doing immediantly and look to me for direction for what they should do next. Maybe it would work even better if I actually bit them instead of using my hand. Who knows maybe I'll give it a try. ADDED: WOW, what a response you have received from this question. I have never seen one question get so many responses. I think you touched a nerve. LOL

First of all: I don't live in the US. I'm Norwegian.
I have a pupy, and it's biting alot. mostly toys, but also me.. so you can say I've been biten by my doberman alot. Now she's done with that stage of her life, and doesnt bite any more. I'm 29 years old.
But seriousely: I've been biten by some not so friendly dogs; Once a loose Riesen Schnauser bit me when I was jogging. He was jumping to reach for my face, but hit my chest. I started bleeding. I was 15 years old at the time.
This is the only large dog I've encountered that's actually bit me, and in my opinion it was the owners fault for not knowing how to take care of that breed. The Riesen needs alot of activities to remain a happy well adjusted dog, while this one didn't get much. I've also encountered some really psycho Border Collies in my time. They didn't bite me, but would have if their owner let them go loose. And God forbid I touched their (the BC's) car, kitchen spot, stairway and so on...The BC in my country is pretty much inbread to be the best sheepdogs they can be. I think that's why they have such bad temper. Inbreeding can to that to dogs.
ALL of the Dobermans, Rotweilers and German Sheperds I've encountered have been well adjusted, happy and calm.
Small dogs however is a whole other story. Dachs hounds and Bichon Frisees I have been biten by several times, and I didn't even intend to make contact with them. I hate small dogs. Always yapping away with a bad temper, ready to chew at you any second. Also with these kinds of dogs it may be the owners fault, I wouldn't know. If so, it seems like small dogs has the worst owners.
I do agree with you. Over here the American Pit Bull is banned. So is the Amstaff. This is just wrong I think, if they want less biting, they should really ban bad people.

I have been bitten several times. When I was little I ran into someones backyard and got bit by some little terrier type dog(I was like 6, so no idea what type)I had to get 13 stitches.
Then when I was 18, I was bitten by a 110 pound Rottweiler that we had adopted that day. It wasn't really his fault though. We didn't know he did not like cats. The cat ran between my legs and the dog chased.. thought he had the cat but actually had my upper thigh. As soon as he realized, he dropped to the floor and just laid there. I decided to keep him and we had him for 7 years before he died. Best dog I have ever had in my entire life!!
I was also bitten by a German Shepherd. We rescued her from a home where they did not feed her and also beat her. So, I don't blame her. I think I would have bitten , too.
I have never been bitten by a Pit. And we have owned many, and used to run a rescue for them. In fact the one we have right now is nothing but a big baby.

Well I work with dogs all day, so yes, I have been bitten, unfortunately it was by my own dog, when trying to break up a fight in the middle of the night between the two dogs-note: not pit bulls. my husband has been bitten at work (husky), my dog has also bitten him in the lip (border collie). sadly, i must mention that there was a woman killed in our county by a pit bull that she was petsitting for. doing the job that I do, I have seen many dogs who will bite, but, usually not pit bulls. i still love the breed and believe that there are good and bad in every breed, not just pit bulls.

I was bitten twice, the worst time by my own dog. Let me explain. My cocker spaniel mix attacked my lab/dane mix. I jumped in to break them up. I know better, but it was a reaction. I put the bigger dog in a head lock & the other dog bit me thinking he was biting the other dog. The other time was on my route (I was a mail carrier for almost 20 years.) There was a dog in heat inside a house & a stray outside who was trying to protect his "territory". He jumped up & bit me on the arm. I hit him with the magazines I had in my other hand & he backed off. I had the 4 dots from his canines. I currently have a pit bull and a Geman Shep mix. The pit bull is the sweetest dog I've ever had. The Shep is agressive, but he was abused before I got him & probably has some brain damage since someone hit him hard enough to knock his eye out. They're both rescues. I take my pit out to public events where little kids pet him. He loves it.

Hiya, although I don't live in the US, I work at a rescue centre where we see many different breeds and temperament dogs. I can honestly say that during the years that I have been involved in rescue I have only been bitten about four times. This has been all by terriers, whether they be Jack Russells, West Highland Whites etc. In my opinion the only reason large breeds, rotties, pitbulls are deemed dangerous is because they have more power and if they are to bite, they can put more efoort into it. These dogs are not safe being used as status symbols. They should only be owned by those who know what they are doing, and love them for the breed they are, not what they look like or how much power they have.

Pit bull terriors may have a bad rep, but it doesn't mean that they are all like that. I know someone who got bitten by a golden retriever, a really friendly dog! the person bitten was 17 at the time. all he was doing was playing with the dog and it turned on him! i'm in GA. =]

I have an American Pit Bull Terrier AND a Staffordshire Bull Terrier & neither have bitten anyone (other than play bites). Now, I have been bitten by a Weiner dog TWICE, once she tried to take my finger off (I bled like a stuck pig), the other time she bit my calf & left a big bruise. I'm mid thirties & live in Pa, hope it helps for you statistics.

I've been bitten 3 times and all by my own dogs! The first time I was 8,and it was our Staffordshire terrier mix,Mitzi. She was a really good dog;she was just very old and had heart failure and I was trying to get her to eat something and she got tired of it and bit me on the wrist(it wasn't deep, just a bad scratch). The second time was by my otherwise sweet beagle.I had given the dogs some rawhide, and he and another of my dogs started fighting over one and I (stupidly) put my leg between them to stop them and he grabbed my leg.He let go as soon as he realized it was me and not Maggie(the other dog),and he was very apologetic, whining and licking my hands and face. The third time,I was letting the dogs take turns eating out of a bag of Bil-Jac frozen dog food and my German shepherd's tooth went through the bag and into my hand. So,in actuality all three bites were my fault, not the dogs, which is probably the case in a lot of dog bites.Still,I don't think I would trust a Pit-bull with kids;I wouldn't trust any dog (unsupervised) left alone with kids, simply because kids will do things to provoke dogs and therefore dog bites.

I was bitten by a lab. It tried to bite me again but I smacked it between the eyes with a stick I picked up. It never tried to bite me again. The dog was abused and tied up in such a way that it could come onto my property which is where the attack occurred. The owners of the dog called animal control to report me for hitting their dog even though it was in self defense. They got several citations instead for their treatment of the dog and for improper restraint.
