I start a new job in two weeks and my vacation will be available to me in six months. I have a new baby and my parents are 2,000 miles away and retired. They have not seen her yet. I told them I will try to come in the spring. She said she wants to see the baby more than anything but I should not use my vacation even though it is available to make a good impression at work. How is taking a week off making a bad impression. What do you think?

as for them coming here that is not going to happen even if i pay for it. Don't ask long story.

Work your butt off for six months and then go on holidays. Your baby and
your parents are more important that any job should ever be. My parents
are no longer living and I would give anything to spend some time with them.
If your company understands that you need to spend time with family then
they will not be upset. You will need an understanding employer because
there will be times that you will have to put your baby first. If they are not
then you can find a better place to work.

If your new job has a policy that you are eligable for vacation in 6 months, then you should take it. If you don't get rollover vacation to the next year, then it would be wise to take it. I'm sorry your parents won't come to see your baby as much as they claim they want to see her more than anything. The proper thing to do so you won't have to worry about hard feelings is to inform your boss of your plans in the spring. Most employers will understand. Good luck and be safe. GOD bless you.

Just send them pictures for now. If they really want to see the baby in person, they will find a way. Since you don't have vacation for 6 months, you simply can't make the trip. Most companies do not advance PTO (paid time off) to employees. You can however take 'no pay leave' under special circumstances such as health issue in the family. You surely do not wish your folks ill just to let them see your kid.

I would wait a year. But then again, I've been back working for five years after staying home with the kids, and I'm taking my first vacation this November. I'm probably not the one to give advise on this!

Bosses who get mad at and stigmatize their workers for taking vacation are stupid.

Your vacation time accrues and is reflected on your pay stub. Paid time off is part of your compensation package- so it is almost like a right. You are entitled to take your vacation time just as much as you are entitled to cash your paycheck.

Just make sure all your work is caught up, and give your supervisor ample notice to plan around your paid time off.
Family first.

Your babe is a cutie

Mom can't travel to you?

I think you should wait till Spring but you can send Mom lots of videos. Actually there should be a way to send them through email.

You usually have to wait one year to take a vacation and then you have to wait for such a time when no one with more "senority" is taking their vacation. It might be 15 to 18 months if your company is small or less if it's big.

Take YOUR vacation as soon as it is available for you to use. Life is too short period.
