The quality of digital versus analog for things such as sound it really only a question of the level to which you may wish to break down the raw data, store it and then reconvert it to sound.

Those who say a vinyl record is "better" have no way of knowing if the sound they are hearing is actually a truer reproduction of the original performance or not. They just like it better. Beauty is in the ear of the listener!!

To the purists maybe - but as far as I'm concerned, when I bring out my old cassettes taped off the radio years ago in FM on c120 tapes that i have to ff or rew for ages to get to where I want or my old videos taped of the 3 available channels all hissy sound and jumpy pictures - I think we are light years better off now!

Minidisc - PVR - USB connections straight to PC/MP3 - multiformat conversions - edit out adverts - compile DVD compilations - loads of channels on TV and Radio - even all the repeats they churn out are great, you used to wait years for a repeat of a programme you had missed.

All of these things rely on digital technology and I've only scratched the surface. I defy anyone to say all that is not progress because there are some frequencies from a cd track that have been left out in the conversion to a digital format!!!!

So I'd answer - NO - the quality of technology today is not lower.

Kids today don't know how lucky they are - blah blah blah.

CD versus vinyl ... sure a purist could argue vinyl is better.

digital radio to FM ... there's no comparison that digital radio is better. If you think otherwise, then you do no understand the fundamental issues with any type of communication system. That to say the signal-to-noise ratio. Just as the SNR for FM is better than AM, likewise the SNR for digital radio is inheritly better than FM.

Yes, in certain respects I think some modern digital techniques are lower quality than older analogue or some longer standing digital techniques. For example MP3 is not as good as older digital CD (MP3 is compressed) which in turn is different in character to LP. Some people prefer vinyl.

FM is better than most DAB stations - Signal to Noise on DAB might be good but is only one parameter - music generally sounds better on FM (which is carried in digital to the transmitters :-)).
