This often depends on what was modeled when they were pups. If the litter was not exposed to a male role model who showed them to lift their leg, they often don't learn it.

Hi, it all depends some dogs just are different , in male dogs at maturity they would start lifting there hind leg to pee, but sometimes they just stat with the puppy stage ,, also i have a female that she would lift her two hind legs to pee, that is so funny , like if she doesn't want her pee to touch her legs, its just that they would learn there own way that they feel comfortably doing ,and also its normal for a older male at that age topee like that,
good luck

my question is how old is the dog? because when they are a year old they are just learning how to raise a leg. they will get it on it's own. Or, if it is a girl dog they will lower their back legs.

It's probably like humans -- some guys stand while they pee and others sit and tuck it in. Generally, females squat when they pee and males lift their leg, but I had a male dog who didn't lift his leg. No big deal.

Usually females squat and males lift their legs. In this case the dogs preference is to squat - he may have hip problems are something that causes pain when lifting the leg.

small dog breeds usually don't lift their leg, and older dogs may have a hard time keeping balance.
our puggle does and doesn't do it...I think it depends on what mood he is in
