Not exactly sure about the origins of the Ku Klux Klan but I'm pretty sure they got their start in the late 1840's or early 1850's when the argument about whether slavery was moral or ethical was beginning to heat up in Congress. The reason the KKK was formed was because a certain group of whites felt that African-Americans were inferior to whites in every way and basically looked upon them as "property." Once the Civil War was over, the KKK was notorious for killing African Americans and causing them all kinds of trouble in the name of preserving "racial purity." Our darker-skinned brothers and sisters were looked upon as a plague that needed to be eradicated from our society, and many of these beliefs are the backbone of the KKK and other white-supremicist groups like the Aryan Nation today.

The KKK formed in the reconstruction period in the south to try to prevent, in the most general of terms, African Americans from achieving civil rights or economic and social Independence. Through intimidation, political cultivation and power, and violence, they attempted to maintain the Antebellum social, economic, and political system.

Interestingly, they achieved a degree of national power and were quite controlling in the south for a period. On the most basic level, they represent a knee-jerk response by a group of people who felt threatened. They are a national shame.

You could Google that subject to find dates and concise history on the KKK.
They wanted to 'cleanse' and 'purify' our nation of all races who were not white. They somehow believed it was their right to decide which race was superior and deserving. They wanted to deny rights and decent living for any race other than whites.
I think the basic beginnings of any hate group or bigotry is based on pure ignorance and fear of the unknown.
Regardless of what the beginnings were, our society has supposedly moved way beyond that level by now, and it's shameful that some of these hate groups still exist.
