Whole Wheat Flour. Mostly any major grocery store will have it. I wouldn't waste any time looking for it in a convenience store.

Whole wheat flour is the American equivalent to the British wholemeal flour.

bread flour is milled not so fine as other flours. so this would be a toughter crumb in your cake. why not use plain wholemeal flour and add 1 teaspoon baking powder and 1/2 teaspoon baking soda per cup of flour called for? that will give you the same as self rising.
