Professional is a word like Gourmet. You pay for the word, rather than the actual product.

Like you said, the photos are 'gorgeous'. It takes equipment, knowledge, experience, facilities and time to create 'gorgeous' photos. Plus- the photographer is doing this for a living. He's gotta' eat and pay rent- so it's reasonable for him to make a profit.
75 quid for 5 photos sounds like an excellent deal to me. Especially if they were well done.
As for your daughter... she should work on her smile.

You are paying for the porfessional's experience and creativity, not just the actual photo's themselves. There's a reason you go to a professional, you cannot do it yourself, and the expertise comes at a price.

Well, professional photographers have to make a living too - consider his costs: equipment (camera, lens, lighting, backdrops, etc.) rent, utilities (gas, light, power, etc.) insurance, etc... and of course profit.
I guess your only recourse as a consumer/customer is to shop around for the best value/price.

Because of the cost of the equipment and the photographers experience in producing gorgeous photos - eitherwise you would have done it yourself.
Then there is premises, heat and light, insurance, film, software, etc, etc
