There is such a small percentage of children who actually have learning disabilities. The rest of them could be helped with discipline, better parenting, better nutrition and more patience.
Children these days have no outlet for self-expression. They eat bad food all day long that is loaded with artificial everything, then sit down in front of computers, video games and tv's all evening. This is not parenting. This is quite close to abuse, in my opinion. Kids don't play outside anymore to expend that extra energy. They don't have gym class at school as much as they used to. Where is that energy supposed to go? This is why they can't pay attention, this is why they aren't reading, etc.
Parents are also very quick to latch on to labeling because it means that they don't have to change their ways, but it is somehow the child's fault for being "born that way."
Very sad.

The school district does the evaluation that determines learning disability. The parent's claim of disability has no bearing. Most children labeled are not labeled due to behavioral problems, but are tested for sensory or processing issues, such as auditory processing, phonetic discrimination, visual memory, etc. These are aspects of learning that can be given a numeric range of 'normal' and 'deficient' performance.
A child that cannot follow what is happening in the classroom is at risk of acting up or tuning out. We all would. Does this mean the child misbehaves at home or that the disability is behaviour related? No. It means the child may need headphones to filter out classroom noises, or a pull-out to work on distinguishing between letter sounds.
A child with learning disabilities is excluded from the scores of the proficiency exams, with which the school itself is evaluated.
So there is some temptation to the school to label poorly performing children.
It's not all bad, though. If they label the child learning-disabled, they must create an IEP (Individualized Education Plan) that describes what services they will provide to the child to overcome or work-around their disability, in the least intrusive environment. The quality of those services varies greatly, though, and there is a lot of finger pointing if the child does not make progress(must be diet,lack-of-sleep,bad parenting, they must have no books in the house!). Many parents have to seek out and pay for their own diagnostic testing and remedial tutoring.
And it sure beats passing the child on until they can be pushed to drop out...which is still happening, to save the money that remedial services cost.

Because schools get more federal funding if a child is labeled as such. Misdiagnoses are "encouraged." It's all corrupt and it's all about the $$$. There is no evidence that suggests there is a greater proportion of learning disabled children now than there was 10 - 20 years ago. One more thing - I'm sure doctors (aka prostitutes for the pharmaceuticals) get kickbacks on buying their brand of ADD medicine. The truth is an ugly thing but here it is...

I think they are an excuse for bad parenting. The child is spoiled and doesnt want to do anything and the parent automatically assumes a learning disability. So then they put them on drugs that aren't even needed. The parent just spoils more and more.

because that away they do not have to learn what a normal person would from what i get out of it its not hard to fail the test my best friend is great at school but for some reason she is labeled as an LD student. but i guess that there are some children who get screwed up by there parents whenever they smoke pot or do drugs so you can really blam it on society.

Years ago some of these kids would have just been labeled as retarded and stuck into a residential school. Some of them though are just kids that no one wants to discipline and teach manners to. Parents need to grow backbones.

It could be more awareness. Or just parents like things to be wrong with their kids so they won't have to take responsibility for their behaviour.
