Think about it - we have a very powerful and well-trained military, but an extreme (and a very laudable) societal aversion to casualties. Knowing this, how would you fight against the US? And do you think the US could win?

I'm just curious what people are thinking.

My question was not meant to be irresponsible or harm US troops. I was trying to make a point. Seems like only a few picked up on it.

In the past I would say no. The problem is that today the war is being fought by politicians rather than experts.

Well if you are curious you've come to the right man--MR. Curious.

Let's take a look at America's track record:

French and Indian War--America and Britain defeat the French and Indians

Revolutionary War--America and the French defeat the British

Barbary Coast War--America defeats the Barbary corsairs

War of 1812--America fights to a draw with England

Mexican War--America defeats Mexico

Spanish-American War--After 100 days America defeats Spain

World War I--Although America only fights for a few months they help the Allies defeat the Axis powers

World War II--America and the Allies defeat Hitler and Mussolini in Europe and Tojo and Japan in the Pacific

Korean War--The United Nation's with America's help force the North Koreans back across the 38th parallel and communism was contained

Vietnam War--America lost this conflict when we stopped fighting in 1973 and pulled out troops in 1975, however while we stopped fighting we were not militarily defeated by the North Vietnamese

Operation Desert Storm--American forces defeated the Iraqi forces in Kuwait

So the track record is pretty impressive. I don't know of ANY country on earth that can even approach American military strength or resources.

The United States is a deadly adversary, just ask the Taliban in Afghanistan, or Saddam. No external force can defeat the United States today.

The problem is that the United States has a large number of people that believe that if we ignore the world it will leave us alone. Like Rome the United States is most likely to fall from within than from a foreign enemy. Rome fell because of its decadence and its internal turmoil. America with its open acceptance of immoral behavior is on a similar course.

You have to rexamine your question. We tend to have a aversion to casualties in foreign wars. We tend to watch and count when it is our children/ourselves dieing to protect land thousands of miles away. If we were to be attacked or have to actually defend I believe it would be a completely differect situation. There is a basic premise in warfare that the hardest opponent is one fought on their soil. Look at the history of warfare many battles have been won to take land but few wars allow a force to truly "occupy" that land.

Now as far as an adversary away from home we have been successful in many campaigns and although clear vistory isnt always achieved it has been rare to say we have been defeated.

You answered your own question. How do you win a war? You loose less soldiers. That aversion to casualties should be the basis for any military. And I will not sit here and tell you how I would kill my fellow Americans. I think your question is irresponsible and should be removed.
