I don’t call my self goth but I do dress like it; I just don’t really see why people have to label things all the time. But it will take forever to explain! To me it’s a way of expression and how one chooses to see the world and among other things. Being goth or punk doesn’t have to do with worshiping devil. Even though people will find some goths that aren’t Christians. This will clarify the subculture. “For people with the gothic personality, their involvement is not merely a rebellious phase, but part of their inner self. Those likely to become interested in Goth and remain involved in it will usually possess most of the following characteristics and traits beforehand: individualistic, reflective, artistic, creative, introspective, emotionally focused and driven, sensitive, non-violent, moody. They are likely to have distaste for authority, possess above average intelligence, and be social misfits. Most are interested in the beautiful, the mysterious and the supernatural”.

It's just another set of definitons of "beautiful." But goth has so saturated pop culture that it doesn't even really seem accurate to call them "freaks" or "misfits" anymore. I mean, when you've got Hot Topics in every midwestern suburban mall, how cool and edgy can it possibly be. When you've got that goth chick on a show like NCIS...lol...it's become lame and mainstream.

I still think the look can be interesting. I have some friends who do the whole Asian "Elegant Gothic Lolita" thing...but they make their own clothes so they aren't quite as standardized and lame. Plus "goth" types do tend to be more interesting to talk to, as far as I'm concerned. I'll take that over some wanna-be Abercrombie mannequin any day.

People label because they're lazy. I mean, stereotyping is something that everyone does, but that's just part of the thought process.
I don't think of the goth or punk subculture much since I left high school... I actually thought it would have died out by now then, but that was me as a teenager. Now I know better.
I think the goths and punks are among the best dressed and best taste in music. Also, I found that they seemed more intelligent and not really followers of the masses, but did their own thing.
Goths and punks are cool... way cooler than the "preps" and "hitties" for sure.

Definately cool; a lot of my friends are goths, including an ex-marine (seriously) who is covered with tatoos, including gravestones and a massive 'SLAYER' on his arm. They get a bit mellodramatic sometimes tho+ the harm-yourself culture is not funny, you shouldnt compete in cutting competitions but young girls like to for attention.. thats basically it

Why do you feel such a need to defend it??
If that is what you like then go for it. Who cares what other people think?? You are the one that has to look silly if that is what you think others are thinking, why would you care?
I disagree that they are above average intelligence

I think it rocks. =) The music is soothing, not depressing. Having only black clothing means that I always match. Nighttime is easier on the eyes than daytime, and healthier for your skin.
