If you are talking about grooming, stay away from poodles, schnauzers and all that require going to the groomer once a month. If you are talking about little care, there is no such dog! They all are high maintenance and require a lot of attention with lots of love. So depending on what you mean, be very careful in the selection. A dog/pet is yours for many years, and what you do with those years can make a happy pet or one that is neglected. Also, neutering and spaying is a must! We have enough unwanted pets in our shelters and on the streets.

It depends on whether she lives in a house or apartment and needs to walk the dog or let it out in the yard. She doesn't want a high-energy dog in an apartment. Also, whether she has kids or not.

Usually short-haired breeds like a Beagle, Lab, or some kid-friendly dog would do. She also has to take into consideration how much time she'll spend with the dog. Some dogs do not do well at home all day by themselves.

Go shopping at your local shelters. They have lovely pets that need homes. Look for a small dog NOT A JACK RUSSELL, they are higher maintenance in terms of exercise than a Greyhound.

The retired Greyhound services have lovely dogs, they have short hair are very calm and low energy.

All dogs require love, attention, daily feeding, watering, exercise and regular trips to the vet. I don't think that a dog could be considered a low maintenance pet no matter what the breed.

Maybe another animal (fish, perhaps?) would be a better pet for your sister.

This is where your sister has to do homework. She has to sit down and figure out what she wants. What gender? What size? What is her lifestyle like? Then just go look at a breed encyclopedia and research it. Pedigree.com has one as well as a pretty good quiz to help you determine which breed may fit you best. You simply enter your information such as the size of your home and yard to the amount of time you'd be able to spend on giving it excercise. They also have a bunch of other cool and useful link such as Fetch-A-Name

It depends if she wants a big dog or a smaller dog. If she wants low maintenance then I definitely wouldn't get a Yorkie or any dog that needs to go to the groomer. I personally like daschunds! (sp) As far as bigger dogs go, I like labs although I wouldn't have one in my house because they shed and drool really bad. Same with golden retrievers which is another bigger dog I like. I'm too picky about my house to have a dog though. They smell no matter how clean you keep things. LOL

You will be surprised at what you will find at the animal shelter- people do give away breeds ,mostly mixed breeds. mixed breeds are healthy (lower vet bills) usually good temperment , and they will be so happy that you saved their life ! i got my cat from my pound ,he's the best ive ever had . the puppies and dogs are frantic for you to take them- they need to be part of the family pack ,oh yeah they are usually neutered ,immunized and microchipped already (more savings)and the adoption fee usually around $60.hope you can save a life , puppy mills are a rip off!

mini fox terrier.
Be careful of Jack Russell Terriers. Had 2 and while they may be low maintenance with grooming, feeding etc but they are hard to train and a little bit crazy :-)
