I think this is a very interesting and thought-provoking question. I would have to guess that most women learn of their HIV status when they are getting prenatal care, or when they need contraception, or during treatment for other STDs. I know a lot of people do not have regular access to health care. When a woman is pregnant, many channels for free health care become available to her. It is at this time that a woman may be presented with an opportunity to be tested for HIV. Testing for HIV during pregnancy is crucial to the health of the baby- with the proper medication, there is close to a 100% chance that the baby will be born HIV negative.

Unfortunately, they usually learn either with a phone call from a previous partner, or during routine blood tests during pregnancy. Things are about to change though. The CDC just recommended including HIV tests as part of routine blood tests during annual checkups.

As a nurse, we suggest that every year when you get a check up to get tested, and we also will test you during your pregnancy period. We do a final test for illegal drugs two weeks prior to the birth.
