Most of the autistic children I've known have had some sort of obsession (nascar, baseball, numbers, etc) I suggest taking or finding that obsession and working it into the educational process.

For a definition of it, see link #1 below.
I have an autistic niece who is now in her early 20's. She went to a special school, as her school district didn't have the resources/knowledge to work w/ her.

As for the parents, they were CLUELESS (actually, we all were) from day one (she stopped speaking at age 18 mos., shortly after being hospitalized for febrile seizures)! Sadly, there was not much info on autism back then, but it still DOES remain a mystery, in many aspects. You could be dealing with someone as "high-functioning" as "Rain Man"or as erratic as the kid from "Mercury Rising'...either way, you have got your work cut out for you.

One thing that helped my brother and sis-in-law was the availability of "respite care" workers, who could give them a break for an afternoon or even overnight. Each state has different programs but it's well worth looking into.

Family support is crucial, and though my mother and several of my family members tried to help, my sister-in-law's own mother refused to have anything to do with her own niece! I don't know why...perhaps she was just weak or in denial.

The second site I listed gives a variety of sources for help and understanding for the families of autistic children.

I wish you the best of luck and hope....I know what a long, difficult road it can be, at least in part!
