It could mean a lot of things, and it's quite possible it means nothing (even though it's no doubt disturbing to you).

Using pop-psychology, there are some things to consider.

Did he die in a violent way? Maybe you have some unresolved anger.
Did he die in a violent way, but you felt helpless to help him? Maybe you have a fear of violent crime, or you feel the important things in your life are out of your control.
Did he die in a peaceful way? How old is he? Maybe your dream is a way of acknowledging that your father won't be around forever.
Was the dream that he was already dead (not the death itself)? Once again, maybe it's a way for you to prepare for the inevitibility of your father passing away and you having to continue on.

The two most vivid dreams of my childhood have involved something like this. When I was very young, I had a dream that my father was shot and killed (and I mean VERY young; I didn't know about skeletons and internal organs, and I thought that as he bled, he would deflate like a water balloon). Lately, too, I've had dreams about my grandfather having already passed away, and my family and I trying to deal with that loss. In the former, I think it showed my fear of violent crime, which has turned into something between a fascination and a phobia for me over the years. In the latter, in waking hours, I can clearly see that my grandfather, once a man with a strong presence and a vibrant personality, is fading, and I think this is almost a way to prepare for that loss.

I've had a dream like that before. It does not mean that your father is going to die in real life, so don't freak out about it. It probably means that there is something missing in your guys's relationship. Either you need to spend more quality time together or something. It could also mean that you have an inner fear of people close to you abandoning you.

Death = warning, reminder.

In your case, that dream could only mean subconsciously you want to remind yourself to have more and better communication with him before losing him. It involves a bit insecurity of yourself. That's why you dream of him being dead. However, it has no proof that that is a prophetic dream. Lots of people have that similar dream of love ones dying.

I don't know if this is true or not, by family firmly believes that when someone dreams of death, it means that someone close to that person is going to have a baby.
Does anyone come to mind?? If so, just watch and see.
