Mosaic tile over ceramic tile?

I have a very sold sturdy ceramic tile on my bathroom walls, house was built in the 1950's. Can I apply mosaic tile over the ceramic tile. Also can I tile over my brick fireplace face and hearth?

You can tile over tile.You need to sand or grind the surface first to make the mortar grab better.This is a Tile Council of America approved method.

I wouldn't risk trying to tile over tile. The old ceramic wall tiles tend to be quite smooth and it is very unlikely that the tile adhesive will be able to get a secure enough grip on them. Although the tiles might stay up fine for a while, I wouldn't be surprised if they started to loosen each time someone bumped into the wall or even closed the door a bit too aggressively. If you're going to invest in new tiles, it is worth investing to do the job right.

For the fireplace it is recommended to install cement wall board (HardiBacker, or similar) before tiling to make sure you have a flawless surface for tiling, but you might be able to get away without if your bricks are exceptionally level and even. Make sure the bricks are thoroughly washed and dry before you apply the adhesive -- dirt can weaken the adhesion. Good luck.

you cant tile over tile ...it has to be taken out first. As for the brick..self leveler - scratch coat to make it smooth before you tile. My husband has been doing this for over 10 years and I used to run the office of his company so I learned a thing or two!

I'm s tile setter for 30 years , and you can tile over tile. There are certain mortars you can use. Ulra contact sold at Menards works great.

yes,dont use your standard thinset though. and dont use mastic. use a polymodified thinset such as mapei brand ultra flex 2 oh and yes over the firplace also
