You stop taking it, admit you have a problem but don't want your life and health to be hurt by it, and seek help if you find you can't stop on your own.

There are no know heath risks from discontinuing Oxycontin. The problems are psychological. Be careful of trading off one addiction for another, especially if you feel you may have an additive personality.

First thing first, tomorrow get in touch with social services and report her, ask them for all the help they can give you in getting custody and start the long battle for sole custody. If this girl is not willing to stop poisoning herself for the sake of the life growing inside of her, what kind of a mother do you think she is going to be? Not the type that should be anywhere near a baby. Or you, if you care as much as you seem to, you deserve better, and at this point, someone needs to think about this little boy. Call her doctor, and her father's doctor, and brothers doctor, and one you can that are getting legal scripts that are being abused or illegally transferred, make sure to make this your sole point to the doctors office, that they are writing scripts out like candy, that it must be clear to them, especially if the whole family has the same doctor, that this much of a known abused narcotic is being distributed, also, oxy's are often time released, so crushing and snorting them is getting a much larger dose quicker. Let the doctor know also that this is how the scrip is being abused, and your next call should probably be to the medical board. There is a huge problem with prescription narcotic abuse. Plan on being a single dad, plan on being a good one, plan on making up for this baby's lack of a mother. No influence there is much better then a bad one. Obviously this drug use is a family pastime with your girlfriend, it is clearly perfectly normal for her, so that is what your son will grow up seeing, believing and becoming victim to, unless you take the actions of a parent to prevent it, and change the cycle. Yeah, withdrawl sucks, so what? Don't bother? Too hard? Too painful? So just keep using until you finally OD? Get aggressive, she's a junkie, I pray that you are not doing this as well thinking it's okay since you're not pregnant, if so, when you call social services and report yourself as well, once you make a baby, it's not your life anymore. Good Luck, and whatever you do, don't justify drug use, it's selfish, and it really is that simple. Actually abusing drugs while pregnant, is so far beyond selfish, that I cannot even find a word to fit it.

It's a hard drug to quite because its high on the addiction scale. Although people will tell you they feel like they are dying when they come off it, the death rate for detoxing off opiate drugs in negligable. I work in an alcohol and drug detox unit, and I have found that to get off a drug like oxycontin you need a long term plan in place with long term support. Speak to your doctor or your nearest alcohol and drug centre for help. It is possible to do an outpatient detox, however the success rate is generaly not as high as an in-patient detox. Make sure you seek counselling, and if you're taking oxycontin for medical reasons make sure you speak to a doctor to seek alternatives. It's almost imposible to do alone, so seek help. If you get the right help the withdrawals will be minimal

First of all, you just cant put it down. It is very addicting and the side effects of cold turkey are not good. Get with your doctor and begin decreasing the dose. He may give you additional medications to help thru this process. Any medication, can be abused, even without the intent to abuse.

Do yourself and your body a favor, go to the doctor and get off the medication.

The best way is to get professional help and accept the fact
that you have a problem. Also family/spouse support is very
critical.

You need to talk to your doctor about getting off of it safely. You need to taper down carefully. Your doctor can give you medications that will ease the withdrawal symptoms (like Clonodine).

Good luck!

I think you'll have to enroll in some sort of rehab if you want to quit safely.

When my dad was dieing of cancer, he took these to ease the pain. He would overdose on it and get really loopy. Mom just hid the bottle from him. Maybe you should talk to your dr, unless your just taking it for the hell of it and not really in any pain....
