Basically it all comes to authority. Catholics around the world have one leader and that's pope in Rome. First split in Christianity came in 1054 AD when eastern church with center in Constantinople decided that it wont answer to pope in Rome, and since then most Christian churches in east are national, like Russian national church, etc. these are led by Patriarchs and have strong influence not only in religious aspects but also in political. Then round 1526 AD there was another split in West, that's when Protestants are formed, unlike Catholics they have no statues of saints or Christ only a Cross and a golden rooster is visible on tha rooftops of their churches. Their main motto is sola scriptura aka only what bible says, so to sum it all up. All Christians believe in Christ but obvious difference is in devotion and liturgical ceremony.

Christian religion began as one after the Christ teaching; after many years there were many Christians only in one church. Some of them start to discuss about the real Christ message and they started to build new religions but always based on the Christ words.
I live in Italy (so sorry for my English) and I'm Christian Catholic and I think that the division in the Christian confession must be removed in future by the God will. But this is just a my opinion of course

Well,
The Catholics claim to have started out as the one true church. And they got a lot of support when the Romans climbed on board their bandwagon. Then some guy named Martin Luther didn't like the way they were playing.
So he picked up his toys and walked over to another corner of the pre-school. And he took some of his friends with him. They started to play, but then they began to fight over who was right.
So one by one they all picked up their toys and walked to their own little part of the playground. We call the people who didn't stay with the Catholics Protestants.
You can go to any particular church camp. And if you ask about the others, they'll generally say something like cult or misguided.
Most claim to read the same Bible and most claim to follow a guy named Jesus. But they all are kind of confused as to what the Bible actually means and wether Jesus thinks homosexuals are bad people or whehter Jesus wants women to talk in church or be silent or wehther you can play music in church with instruments or not. Some get confused as to exactly who is in charge and they look to the pope but others looki to elder and others look to their minister.
Generally, you'll just go to tthe church your mom or dad went to or maybe your freinds went to and they will let you know that they are right so you can feel good about yourself and feel sorry for all those other poor clowns who got it wrong.
It's all pretty cool. It's like Christians have made their own tower of Babel but with doctrine instead of languages.

catholics believe you have to be good to get to heaven, protestants believe christianity is a 'get out of jail free' card on earth and a 'get into heaven free' card for the hereafter, and mormons believe joseph smith got information from an angel and when he lost it the angel got mad and gave him a slightly different copy of the information.

They are not all christians. Christantiy is a way of life that comes from accepting Jesus as your savior, and repenting of your sins, and following the footsteps that Jesus lived through obedience to God's word.
Those who do not teach the true word of God and salvation through acceptance of Jesus are not Christians, but satan's counterfits. The only way to the kingdom of God is through His son Jesus. There is no other way. Just believing in God alone is not going to get you into heaven.
John 14:6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
John 3:3 Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God
John 3;36 He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.
Matthew 7:21 Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.
And the will of God who is Jesus Father is to accept Jesus as the man who died on the cross to pay for our sins, by the shedding of His blood. If "religions" cannot teach this, and do not obey this law of God, they are not Christians.
