If you think about it, there are at least two senses involved here.
Sight - if your co-workers have to watch you spitting into your garbage can, it would be quite off-putting. If they cannot see you, I'd say you're fine.
Hearing - Unless you are perfectly and utterly silent, which is unlikely, they also have to hear you. There is no way around this one. Use the restroom.
If you have some particular habit that requires you to spit, like using some form of mouth-based carcinogen, that is completely inappropriate for the office and must stop immediately.
Hopefully whatever you are spitting does not involve a third sense - smell.

yes it is disgusting someone else has to empty out your garbage can and therefore have to deal with you spit. If you must spit, do it in the bathroom either down the sink or better in the toilet where it can be flushed awa. Why do you feel the need to spit anyway?

are you spitting chew? Why are you spitting so much? I wouldn't spit at work. It's totally gross. Nobody wants to see something like that. It's unprofessional and very unclassy.

It is for the person who has to empty your trash. Spit into a tissue and toss that away.

For the person who empties your trash can, yes, it's nasty. Why not use a non returnable plastic coke bottle. You can put the lid back on it and throw it away at the end of the day.
