what is the deal with dogs chasing their tails so enthusiastically that they lose all sense of where they are and run into crap?

my dog does it too only he is a neo- mastiff and when he starts its best to clear the room of toddlers and lightweight humans. once he ended up knocking himself into the wall then backed up and fell straight down the steps. asked a vet because it can get annoying and he said all dogs do it , even breeds who have their tails bobbed. funny to watch tho.

Dogs who obsessively and compusively chase their tails may have a "dog" form of OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder.) If you feel this behavior is occuring too frequently, you may want to contact your vet. However, obsessive tail chasing, digging and barking are symptoms commonly associated with boredom induced OCD, so increasing both physical and mental excercise could reduce this behavior.

"In boredom cases (digging, barking, tail chasing) it is time to step up your dog's activity level. A tired dog is a content dog, and not a compulsive pet. Get out and play more! Take long walks, look into Doggy Daycare, play fetch .. you get the idea. By expending your dog's energy on a safe, fun outlet, you not only ensure that your dog is happy, but you also increase your own bond with your pet...

Compulsive Disorders can also be part of your dog's genetic make-up. Certain breeds are pre-disposed to these behaviors, such as Dobermans, who suck on their skin, German Shepherds, who who chase their own tails, and English Bull Terriers, who have the odd habit of sticking their heads underneath objects and freezing in place. Strange, yes? Welcome to the world of Odd Dog Behavior."

Wow, fun dog you have. They are getting dizzy just like we do if we spin around too much. Your question made me think about the dog named Murray on Mad About You. He was chasing what they thought was an imaginary mouse, but finally realized he was really chasing a mouse. It was so funny. Best wishes.

funny. A loved dog is very playful and they can act silly. My dog will spend hours chasing a shadow in one place. Crazy, but funny to watch!

my boyfriends daughters encourage our dog to chase his non existent tail. He entertains them. He's so nice to act silly so they can laugh.

You might want to give him some extra exercise. Any repetitive movements usually are because of boredom.
