I have a 20 year old fixed, male cat who has been urinating outside the litterbox and spraying all over my apartment. I am afraid something is wrong with him, but perhaps it is just old age. Does anyone have any advice/suggestions for me?

Have the vet check him out to see if something is wrong him.

It sounds like he is having some urinary distress and a vet should check the senior gentleman for any crystal formation or infection in his urine which is burning him and causing pain when he urinates.

Any cat of that age also needs a vet check to see that his kidneys, liver, pancreas etc. are functioning well. I have a 22 yr old cat and she does not have any problems using her litterbox. I think you are right in suspecting that your cat may need an evaluation by a vet. Don't delay in this as once cats start to urinate inappropriately it can be hard to break them from doing it.

This is a very very old cat. Most only live to be about 15 -17. I would guess old age more than anything is your problem. Your cat is possibly having a hrd time just getting into the box now.

Take him to a vet to be checked out for possible internal problems (bladder control, arthritis, kidney disorder etc.)

I have a 16 yo fixed male cat that was doing the same thing.
Make sure you have not changed the litter type (scented/unscented).
Also it may be that he wants the box cleaned more often.
Get another litter box, I found that putting out another box helped me find where he wanted to do his 'business'.
My vet told me to put a plastic liner on the floor, this will encourage him to go in the box because when going on the plastic, his little paws get wet.

Hope this helps.

Cats are very clean and picky. Do you clean out his litter box often enough? I have 2 cats myself and I scoop out their boxes twice a day and then put all new litter in them once a week after I scrub them out with hot soapy water. But if you kitty is that old, I'd take him to the vet just to make sure he's alright. You don't want him to suffer.

Check with your vet. Could be a urinary tract problem, or could just be old. If he is spraying in the same places all the time, put some vinegar on a rag and put the rag in that spot. They hate vinegar.
