There are various ways of using rods, plates, pins, and screws to heal a bone. One, screws are used inside the leg and they are connected externally to hold the bone in place. Two, they may put a plate against the bone and screw it on. Three, a rod may be put through the shaft of the bone. It depends on the type of break, where it is located, if other methods were unsuccessful, etc.
