There are pills you can get from your vet, but this really depends on what you need them for.

Do you have a young puppy, in the active hyper stage? If this is the case, your pup just needs more play interaction time with you. If you give him enuf, he'll be much calmer.

Is this because you need to take him on a car trip and the car stresses him out badly? Then your vet can give you a sedative to help him sleep while in the car on a long trip (I had to do this with a cat once).

What kind of breed you have is a factor too. Some breeds are simply more active and need regular play time and stimulation beyond the puppy phase (like Border Collies).

So yes, there are things you can do, but carefully consider why you are wanting to do this first.

The only way to calm a dog is to give it loads of exercise. Not just now and then, but every day. Get the dog into a routine and go for a walk at the same time everyday. This way he'll only be overly active when he knows it's walkies!

Generally, it is called EXERCISE. There is a pill, called Acepromazine, that someone has always talked about. It is for things like travel, anxiety over storms, and things like that. Not for calming a generally hyper dog down. It has to be prescribed by a vet, and no vet will give it for that.
Really, try more exercise!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have never found that Benedryl works very well for either itching or making a dog sleepy.

Yes there is, but pills shouldn't be given to a dog without a good reason. Do you have one or do you have a dog who just needs exercise and training?

In the book Marley and Me, Marley was given tranquilizers for when he was too excited or scared of storms. I've never heard of this being done before. Good luck, I've got a very, very hyper 9 month old golden retriever.

Benadryl. It works great for people and dogs. It is used for allergies. In the hospital, doctors order Benadryl as a sleep aid for adults. It helps people and dogs to relax. We give one capsule in a piece of bread to our big dog. He has allergies. He is also much calmer.
