I would be too ashamed. I would be afraid everyone would assume I was an ignorant, hateful, bible-thumping, poorly educated, bigoted, lazy redneck.

Of course I would and I will. I'm from Arkansas. There's nothing wrong with being from the south. And as for being ignorant, hateful, bible-thumping, poorly educated, bigoted, and being a lazy redneck, that's a typical sterotype. Anyone can be those things! Perhaps you should take a trip down South and see how Southerners REALLY are!

Why WOULDN'T I admit it? YES I AM FROM THE SOUTH! I'M FROM TEXAS, YA'LL.

By making the statement that "everyone" assumes that people from the south are ignorant, hateful, bible-thumping, poorly educated, bigoted, lazy rednecks, you only show your own ignorance, your own poor education, and your own bigotry.

I could say that everyone from the north talks funny, walks around with a stick shoved up their rear, and is completely ignorant about anything outside of their area. But that wouldn't be true of most Northerners. Just you .

I'm afraid I don't understand your question - because, as you put it, admitting you're from the northern U.S. implies you're an ignorant bigot.

I was born and raised in South Louisiana, and am absolutely proud of it and my unique Cajun heritage.

Of course I'm not ashamed to tell people where I'm from - I wouldn't associate with someone who thought "all people from the South" were a certain way to begin with, so it really doesn't matter.

Just FYI, "ignorant, hateful, Bible-thumping, poorly educated, bigoted, lazy rednecks" are *everywhere*. For you to assume certain types of people all come from a certain area shows just how ignorant and uneducated you must be.

I'm from Virginia and I always shout it outloud because it makes it sound as though I was a virgin, which is pretty neat I think.

I guess we ARE kind of ignorant, but how would you be if you had just a third of a brain??

I have to disagree with you on several other aspects, though. I'm not bible thumping. I've never even picked up a bible; they're too heavy. I'm sure as heck not hateful, you stupid bastard, piece of crap!! lol jk

I'm not poorly educated--I'm not educated at all. Lazy redneck... maybe, but it's my parents' fault because they didn't make me with enthusiasm. And what does bigoted mean??

Hey, is Virginia really part of the Southern US??? =p

Just as an experiment, (and I wanted to see The Big Apple), I went to New York City for a couple of weeks, checked into a nice hotel, and spent nearly all my time walking around seeing the sights.

I have been in several NYC cabs- not bad at all- I don't see why people complain about them all the time.

I talked to people in the city that lived there all their lives, and when they met me, they thought I was charming, well educated, and a courteous person. I got some strange looks from some when I kept saying "yes ma'am and yes sir", but that is just the way I was raised to speak.

They got a kick out of my southern accent- I wasn't even aware I had one- I just thought I had a slight one. I got a lot of laughs with my Jeff Foxworthy impression- I can do it perfectly!

They asked me a lot of questions about what it was like in my small town, what I did for a living, things like that. They treated me with respect and I never got the impression that they were condescending to me.

Now, I pretty much take people on a one-to-one basis- I don't judge as much any more as I used to- people are very similar all over this great country.

I just felt a tiny bit claustrophobic- I am not used to being around so many people at one time. But, all in all, I enjoyed myself in NYC.

Chances are that they would figure out - southern accent and all.

Also, why do you think people think of the south so negatively?

Southerners are also intelligent, gracious, proud, educated, jewish and hard working. The only one who seems ignorant and bigoted is you.
