You are worried about offending them and this is a good thing. I have a remedy for you. Put a little Vicks vapor rub in your nose. all you will smell is Vicks, not B.O. My niece does this in a lab class she has so the odors don't make her sick during a dissection. She sez it works well.

I think you need to look around your community more. Do some research and ask some questions. Volunteering should be enjoyable and you should find something that you have experience in or are good at. Example; Do you like to cook, then look for a soup kitchen that needs cooks. Can you knit or crochet hats, socks or mittens, even blankets to keep someone warm. If you look you will find the right volunteer job. Some sights are on the Internet. Also there are animal shelters to look into if you love animals.

I can't beleive I'm saying this, but, sometimes people ARE rude at the soup kitchens, and sometimes they are smelly. But, you probably would be rude and smelly too if you had such a hard life. I used to be homeless myself, and I was smelly because I wasn't able to take a shower and my daughter was smelly at her daycare everytime they took off her sneakers and it didn't have any socks in them. Now, things have lightened up and I have a job at a law firm and my daughter has a choice of clothes. Not all homeless people are bad. It's great if you go and help them, I'm sure it'd be nice for you to talk with them too. What if it was you?

First, it is honorable that you want to volunteer to help those less fortunate than yourself. However, if those you plan to help are homeless, chances are that they will smell, or lack proper manners. That shouldn't stop you. People are homeless for all kinds of reasons, but they are still people and deserve to be treated as such. If you think you can't handle being face to face with them, see if you can volunteer behind the scenes, maybe doing office work or delivering food to shut-ins.

Not to be rude, but I think you should reconsider doing volunteer work. First, your main reason behind it is to make you feel better about yourself and not about the people who you would be helping. Your motives behind this seem selfish and your attitude towards the homeless is sad.

Very nice of you to volunteer to help those that are less fortunate than you. The smell might be bad at first but you will get used to it. Tell the folks at the daily bread of your concerns and they will be able to advise you.

I would think that if you care enough about the homeless to volunteer, the 'smell' if any will not bother you as bad as you may think. That's just me- it'd be worth it to help someone out.

Hopefully, they will not be smelly, they do have places in most states that accommodate them to have showers and sleeping areas. Good luck and God bless.

Have you thought of helping from back-stage? Pure charity is actually done from behind the curtains and not by showing-off on stage.

Why not insist that the only vagrants you serve bathe twice daily, change their clothing every other day, wear fresh socks each day, shave every morning and sleep indoors. You will only have to serve yourself...................
