Are there buses? Planes? Taxis? I'll be in Bangkok but want to visit a friend in Rayong just for a weekend, how do I get there and back? About how much would it cost (in US dollars, please) and how long of a trip is it?

There are buses, taxis, and limos. Distance approximately 179 Km or 119 miles.

Airconditioned Buses from the Ekamai or Eastern bus station takes 3 hours costs 87 to 101 THB or about USD 2.50 to 2.75, see http://www.asianetonline.com/provincethai/central/rayong/welcome/how.htm

Taxis: From Bangkok, around 2,000 THB or USD 54 and about 2+ hours. You may even negotiate with him to stay there and take you all around. Find a driver with a newer car though.

Limos: You could take a limo or sedan that your hotel may provide for a price. I went from Bangkok to Pattaya once for a day and it cost around 6,000 THB or USD 150. You would probably have to negotiate your rate since you will be staying over the weekend. Other services such as Bangkok Limo or Image Limo run around 3,500 to 3,960 THB or USD 95 to 107 one way.

Airlines: Nothing I could find direct.

My suggestion: depending on what you like. Limo or sedan would be nice but, costs 2 to 3 times a taxi. Taxi is great but, no back up if it breaks down. Bus is cool if you are comfortable with that and your friend can pick you up.

Good luck and enjoy your trip

Go to the Ekemai (Eastern) bus station on Sukhumvit - it's on the Skytrain route and take the bus, really the only alternative. A ticket should cost no more than $5 one way and the trip takes about 2-3 hours depending on traffic. Do not, I repeat, do not take anything but the express bus; the express bus takes the freeway (or actually the expressway) most of the way. A local bus will stop at lots of towns between Bangkok and Rayong and it gets crowded. You shouldn't take a taxi - that would put you out 50 bucks or so and would only be marginally faster. The bus is the only way to go. At the bus station, look for the signs saying "Rayong" and off you go. Have s good trip - nice beaches there.

you could take a bus, plane or a taxi, but the bus is probably the cheapest and it is only about 2 hours drive from the new airport.

you should ask your friend where to get the bus from.
