Urdu is the national language of Pakistn. Hindi, spoken in India is almost the same. Urdu is also understood in other SAARC countries such as Bangladesh, Nepal and Bhutan. There are many Urdu- speaking people in the middle east, including Dubai.

Condoleezza Rice advised people working in the govt to learn a few languages including arabic and urdu, so i guess its useful. I can speak urdu and because of this, I can understand Hindi, Punjabi, and a little bit of Gujrati because Urdu is very similar to other eastern languages.

has ur friend been teaching u urdu? u left out a word, i think, in ur first line.
i learnt urdu last year cos its the language my inlaws speak. so yes, it was useful.
also, cos it's so similar to hindi, you can understand hindi (most bollywood movies) without having to read subtitles.
if u had indian shopkeepers that u had trouble communicating with, then urdu will help.
and if ur ever planning to work or live or travel in india/pakistan/bangladesh etc or the middle east, u will find it useful.
or if u want to show ur friend u care, then probably useful as well
urdu is actually one of the most commonly spoken languages in the world - more than english even, if im not mistaken
