Years ago, I attended a seminar and the speaker suggested dating a person for a year to go though what a year in the life with a perspective spouse would be like. If you think they are the one for you and you for them, get engaged but only for long enough to plan the wedding. 18 months total is average from first date to wedding. Good luck!

YES! Everyone is different. I know someone who dated 6 months, engaged 6 months and were wed immediately. I think the heart knows when they've found the one. I think, however, you should be engaged at least 6 months to kind of get a "feel" for things.

It wasn't for me. I dated my ex for 2 1/2 years, and after about 4 months he dropped the "M" bomb (marriage), and we used to joke around about when and if we get married, etc....it just made it harder when things ended.

time is not the only factor--review you goals in life and compare to each other that those goals will fit--careers that could take you to another place to live, children, homelife expectations, social expectations--in a nutshell, will you be compatable in life in the future? good luck!
