Combustion of fossil fuels releases CO2 and other gases into our atmosphere. Although CO2 is less than .05% of our atmosphere, it plays a large role in global warming. As the suns energy passes through out atmosphere, much of it is reflected off of the earth and radiates back towards outer space. The role of carbon dioxide is that as the rays are being reflected off the surface of our planet, CO2 absorbs infrared radiation, adding energy to the atmosphere and thus increasing it's temperature.

Carbon dioxide and some other gases (like water vapor) can pass visible light through, but block infrared light (heat). So sunlight passes through them on the way down to earth, hits the earth, and is converted to heat (infared light). The infrared light can't go back up and is trapped near earth. This is the greenhouse effect.

Some greenhouse effect (from natural levels of wter vapor and CO2) is necessary for us to live on earth, which would otherwise be too cold.

But manmade ("anthropogenic") CO2 from things like power plants and cars is causing too much greenhouse effect. This is known as global warming. That will cause oceans to rise and flood coastal areas, as ice on land melts and runs into the sea. The warming will change climate (temperature and precipitation) around the world in a variety of ways (it's very complicated), which will disrupt our agriculture.

Rich countries will be able to deal with it, although it will cost them huge sums of money, more than it would cost to fix the problem. In poor countries, many people will starve, unless the already burdened rich countries help.

EDIT I looked at the website cited below. It's silly stuff, just flat wrong about the evidence. There's always a few dissenters. They may have convinced the guy below, but they haven't convinced their scientific peers. Read this for the true picture of where science stands:

http://www.sciencemag.org/cgi/content/fu...

"Such statements suggest that there might be substantive disagreement in the scientific community about the reality of anthropogenic climate change. This is not the case."

"Politicians, economists, journalists, and others may have the impression of confusion, disagreement, or discord among climate scientists, but that impression is incorrect."

All scientific articles in peer reviewed journals that contained the words "climate change" from 1993-2003 were surveyed. 928 of them. The number of articles that said global warming was not happening.

Zero.

The burning of fossil fuels (oil, gasoline and the like) has increased the amount of carbon dioxide in the air. Which as you might know is a product of combustion of these fuels. The co2 has over the years formed a blanket over the earths atmosphere hence causing heat to be trapped in the atmosphere hence the temprature of the earth is going up. This has caused a change in the earths climate, the polar ice caps are melting and the ocean levels are rising a a result. That is what I think the green house effect is. I might be wrong so dont take my answer as the gospel truth

Its very simple
As politicians keep talking their brains begin to heat up. This happens after they start talking because their brains are not working until after they start. Then as their brains heat up the rest of their bodies, including their lungs heat up, cause the air that comes out of their mouths to be very warm.
That warm air then rises. It fills the planet with itself.
THEN a miraculous thing happens. Its inexplicable. Not explainable and mysterious even.
It begins to either Heat or Cool or Change the planet temperature.
THis year it is heating, many years ago it was cooling and soon it will only CHANGE the planet, in a way we cannot ascertain specifically but it WILL change.

GLobal warming is a ruse to get more power. it is not a real concern but used by powerful people to take more money from you and to leverage more power to a world government.

I dare anyone to read the link below and feel so confident in gasp man made global warming.

Basically CO2 and other greenhouse gasses act like glass on our atmosphere like glass in a greenhouse. They light the light and heat in, but reflect that light and heat back to earth instead of letting it out. So the temperature increases.

GREENHOUSE EFFECT MEANS A CLOSED SPACE IN WHICH C02 IS ENCLOSED...CO2 IS VERY GOOD ABSORBER OF HEAT....HENCE IT INCREASE THE TEMP OF ENCLOSURE......
IT CAN BE USED AS TEMP REGULATOR
THE SAME IN CASE OF GLOBAL WARMING.....ATMOSPHERE IS CONSIDERED AS THE ENCLOSURE IN WHICH CO2 REMAINS AT BOTTOM DUE TO ITS HEAVY NATURE....AND INCREASE THE TEMP.SO AS CO2 INCREASE THE TEMP OF EARTH INCREASES......HIGHER THE CONC OF CO2 MORE THE INCREASE IN TEMP
