If illegals have the choice between punishment and deportation.
They would pick punishment.

The law says the punishment is deportation. That is the only way to correct the offense, since if they were allowed to stay, they would have profitted from their crime - after all, that's why they did it in the first place.

It happens that the punishment for what they did IS deportation.

Look, this isn't about revenge, it is about having to subsidize too many poor people in our schools and in health care and other services. Our schools and health care are failing our own people under the huge numbers of illegal immigrants here, and we are the ones footing the bill for the worse services. Poor people can't make enough to pay taxes for things like education. In California, even not counting new school construction, it costs $10,000 to educate a single child for a single year. Thirty years ago LAUSD was one of the best school districts in the nation, now it is one of the worst.

Deportation solves the problem, aside from punishing those who broke the law. I am open to other solutions, but it has to fix the schools and health care for our own people, and stop the problem, going forward.
