The fastest route if you're driving is to take the 5 fwy. north to the 152 west, to the 101 north into San Jose. It's not very scenic, though. If you don't care about how long it takes, the 101 fwy would be better because it is more scenic, and there are more interesting places to stop along the way.
If you want to let someone else drive, the Greyhound bus costs about $45 one way. I don't know what route they take.

the scenic longer route is the pacific coast highway or you take the 5 from la but it changes a bit near san jose. go get a rand mcnally map and see the route. i have taken the trip many times. amazingly once you go past magic mt in the la basin it is wide open farms and mts allllll the way to san jose.

US 101 will take you from Downtown LA to San Jose (approx. 10 hr drive) The road is toll free, just pay for gas.

101 North all the way, no tolls I travel this all the time and with only one or two short stops it will take from downtown LA to Dowtown SJ 7-8 hours
